“The man who holds me while I sleep and keeps me safe. Okay, I won’t,” Lizzie grinned.

“Fuck, girl,” Maker growled.

“Break’s over. Gotta go,” Lizzie said, laughing and giving Maker’s hand a final squeeze as she rose from the booth.

“You gonna be okay with Nate?” Maker asked.

Lizzie glanced over her shoulder at Nate who was trying not to look like he was studying the byplay between them and failing miserably.

“Nate’s a regular. He drives by twice a week and stops for late night breakfast and then sleeps in his rig in the parking lot. He’s married to a court reporter named Melinda and has two kids in elementary school. Zach and A.J. Hang around long enough, and he’ll show you pictures.”

Maker stood and, looping an arm around Lizzie’s shoulder, directed her toward the front door.

Lizzie watched him survey the room, his gaze lingering on the scattered faces.

Then, hand on her neck with his thumb stroking along her jawbone, Maker pulled her into the shelter of his big body and kissed her with enough heat that no one could miss the claim he just staked.

Maker’s gaze swept the room one more time, and then he was gone.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

I Am Those Kinds of People

Gate

Gate opened his eyes to find Anna already awake and studying him.

The furrow between her brows told him that she’d been awake for a while and she’d been thinking, which was always dangerous with a woman like her.

She propped on her elbow and reached out a finger to trail down the skin of his arm.

Gate let her explore and waited for her to get whatever she was chewing on off her chest.

She did the finger touching thing a few more times and then, “How do we go forward? How do we make this work?”

Gate caught her hand in his own and raised it to his lips. “We’ll figure it out. Together. This is our story. Doesn’t matter if anyone else likes it or not. We’ve only got to please us.”

“You always make things seem so easy.”

“That’s because they are.”

Anna smiled, “I admire your confidence.”

Gate rolled to his back, pulling Anna with him so that she was sprawled across his chest. He tapped his forehead, “A lot of the time, up here is a train wreck. But when I’m with you, everything is calm.”

“You still sleep like a dead person,” Anna mused.

“Only when I’m with you,” Gate grinned against her hair.

“I hate this house,” Anna said.

Gate went completely still. Anna’s mind still intrigued the hell out of him. She could go zero to ninety in nothing flat, and he had no idea where this conversation was headed. “What do you want to do with it?”

“Burn it down.”

“Probably not in your best interest financially.”

“Probably not.”
