“You think the office is bugged?”

“I’m not sure, but someone always seems to be a step ahead of us everywhere we go, so it’s starting to look that way.”

“And we can’t call for a tech team.”

“Not without tipping our hand.”

Brent cut his eyes toward me, “What’s this got to do with tall, goateed, and handsome?”

“Both nothing and everything.”

“Sounds ominous.”

We reached the park entrance, and I made for the tree-lined walking path. “Gate says I can trust you, so I’m just going to lay it all out, and then you can decide what you’re going to do.”

Brent raised his brows, “Gatesays?”

“I know, right?” I said, rolling my eyes. “Sounds so middle school.”

“Aside from the fact that you’ve spent the past few years I’ve known you avoiding the man, he’s hot enough to melt saddle leather, so I don’t even blame you for revisiting the scene of the crime, but what in the world has gotten into you?”

“We’re married.”

“And you didn’t invite me? You absolutehag.”

“We were always married. As in, never got divorced.”

“Did Gate happen to know that detail?”

“Nope.”

Brent’s brows rose, “The plot thickens. Tell daddy everything.”

“He signed the papers. I didn’t. Never filed them.” I held up a hand, “And before you ask, I know it was juvenile and melodramatic, but I just couldn’t.”

“And he found out, so now you’re back together?”

“Pretty much.”

“ThankGodI don’t have to pretend to be married to you anymore.”

“What? It wasn’t that bad.”

“Honey, you’re beautiful and all, but you’re absolutely the wrong persuasion for me. Anyway, I was a terrible fake husband, and we both know it.”

“Gate did kind of pick up on that.”

“Are any of those motorcycle guys gay? Or even switch hitters? I couldsorock that whole leather situation.”

Now that there was no more pretense between us, this was the most relaxed I’d seen Brent act. Ever.

The fake marriage undercover partner scene must have really done a number on him.

“Not that I know of, but I haven’t been around that much.”

“An agent can only hope.” A wistful expression passed over Brent’s features, and then he went full on 007 again. “You should get out.”

I frowned, “What do you mean?”
