“I mean, you should leave the agency and not look back. You’ve got two great kids and a gorgeous man who, from the glow you’re wearing this morning, isn’t even holding a grudge.”

I stopped beside a memorial fountain. “I know. He really is too good to be true.”

“All the more reason for you to bail on the agency, let someone else catch the bad guys, and build a life with your man.”

I looked up at Brent, “That was surprisingly sentimental.”

“We both know where this is going. A lot of nowhere. Our leads are dead ends, our informants have clammed up. And top brass has us chasing our tails. Any one of those things I could overlook, but all of them together? We’re getting played. Which means it’s only a matter of time before one of us is removed from the game. I don’t want it to be you, and I certainly don’t want it to be me.”

I chewed my bottom lip. “What if there’s a way for us to do this without the agency?”

“Treason? Sedition? I’m all ears.”

“The club.”

“You mean a motorcycle club is going to take on a drug cartel and the FBI?”

“Okay, when you say it like that….” I trailed off.

Brent started walking again, expression serious, “What are you thinking?”

“Sending someone inside. Getting close enough to find out who’s pulling the strings. And then letting Gate do what he does.”

“Just talking about this could get both of us killed.”

“I know. I’ve got an idea. But Gate’s not going to like it.”

“Gate not liking it is about to be the least of your worries.”

“Is there anyone we can go to with this?”

“I wouldn’t even know where to start.”

“Me either.” I glanced over, “Listen, Brent. You’ve been a great partner. And I’m sorry a lot of working here with me sucked for you.”

“Not entirely,” Brent interrupted. “I had the beach and the Army Rangers for eye candy, so it wasn’t a complete loss.”

“But you don’t have to do this. Plausible deniability. I’ll just go my own way, and you don’t have to know a thing.”

“And let you have all the fun? I thought you knew me better.”

I smiled, “Gate wants a meeting.”

Brent’s hand went to his chest, “I get to see thecompound?”

“You might even get a tour.”

“Count mein.”

Don’t Do Anything Stupid

Gate

“Girls went to Anna’s last night for margaritas and gossip,” Gate said to his brothers gathered around the table for an early morning meeting. “Anna mentioned that Holly excused herself to the ladies’ room and never came back.”

“She dip out on the party?” Tex asked.
