Maker nodded and looked out the front windows again.

“Why?” Lizzie asked. “What’s wrong?”

Maker shook his head, “I don’t like it. When’s your shift end?”

“Four this afternoon.”

“I’m gonna send someone around three. You’ll recognize the cut,” Maker explained. “Don’t let anyone else near you.”

“What’s this about?”

“How many times in the past month have you been approached or seen someone hanging around who made you nervous.”

Lizzie bit her lip, “A few.”

“If you’ve noticed a few, there have been more than that. And I want to know who they are and what they’re doing here. So you’re not going to be outside this building without protection until I figure it out.”

Lizzie nodded, reaching for Maker’s hand. “Okay,” she said, with just the brush of her fingers against his, but that was enough.

It was enough to let him know that even though she didn’t understand, she’d do what he needed her to do so that he’d be the one who was okay.

So that his mind would be free to think of other things, evaluate other situations, figure out solutions to other problems, even though she didn’t have a clue what they were.

Maker dropped a twenty on the counter. “Thank you,” he said, touching her fingers once and then turning for the door.

Chapter Thirty-One

I’d Rather Not Get My Ass Handed to Me

Gate

“They’re here,” Ink said from the doorway of Gate’s office.

Gate held up a hand and nodded.

Ink disappeared, and Gate could hear his boots tromping back down the stairs.

“I agree it would be a good move on our part,” Gate agreed with Judge Hawthorne who’d called with a proposition for the club.

“It’s a delicate situation, and Mancini is frantic, which isn’t like him at all.”

“I understand. We’ll do anything we can.”

“I’ll pass that along,” the judge said and then ended the call.

Before Gate could wonder what the elder Mancini could possibly need from the Dragons, a text from Maker flashed across the screen.

Got trouble. Lizzie connected somehow. Meet soon.

Gate rose from his desk and typed as he walked.

Let me know.

He hit the stairs leading from his second-floor office to the main room of the compound, and he saw Anna and Brent waiting on the steps of the front entrance, Ink standing beside them.

Boots to the stairs, Gate surveyed the landscape and noticed that the few groupies in the place had huddled up and were staring. And that pissed him off to no end.

So when he reached the landing, he did exactly what he’d been thinking about doing since he left her earlier that morning and slid his hand around her neck up into her hair and kissed her.
