And me.

I’d changed out of work clothes into somethingmore comfortable, which was a couple steps up from lingerie but not something I’d wear in public.

The straps were thin, the material silky, and although I’d never imagined wearing it for Gate when I bought it, I loved the way the bodice clung to my breasts and accentuated my hips, with the skirt falling in waves to the floor.

And the color was a deep forest green, which the salesclerk said did wonders for my hair.

“Fuck me,” Gate growled when he saw me.

He took a step toward me, and I didn’t hesitate.

I launched into his arms.

He walked me back a step, until my ass hit the table, and then he slid his hands into my hair and kissed me.

The kiss was all licks and nibbles, the way you play with a dessert that you want to last.

Gate rubbed the scruff of his beard against the skin of my neck, and chills chased each other up and down my arms.

My nipples went tight, and then liquid pooled in my core.

“Not gonna lie, kitten. Coming home to you like this,” he said, skimming his hands along the silk of the confection, “and the table like this makes me thankful as fuck. But I also know you got thoughts spinning in that beautiful head of yours, so why don’t you go ahead and tell me what’s on your mind?”

I leaned back and looked up, “How do you know something’s on my mind?”

“Is it not?”

“Well, yeah, but how did you know?”

Gate chuckled, “Because it always is. So I’m going to enjoy the bounty.Allof it. But I know you’ve got some words, and I want to hear them.”

Gate held out my chair, and we sat to eat.

“I met a woman today,” I started. “Claire Dupree. You know her?”

“Can’t say I do,” Gate said between bites.

I filled Gate in on my meeting in the park and then got to the good stuff.

“I asked her if she’d go undercover, but she said that wasn’t her gig, so she suggested I do it.”

I held my breath, waiting for Gate’s response.

He set his fork on his plate and leaned back in his chair to look at me.

“This what you wanna do?” he asked.

“It’s what I feel like I should do,” I answered. “I’m not going to lie and tell you that it doesn’t scare me. But I might be the best chance these women have.”

Gate nodded, “I’ve got a question.”

“Okay,” I said, struggling to read his expression.

“How’d you get into undercover work for the FBI when you never left Savannah? At least not that I know of.”

“Stash and Rooster didn’t tell you?”

“Didn’t ask them. I’m asking you.”
