“Anna needs protection,” Gate said.
“Okay. When?”
“On an undercover op inside one of Freemont’s drug parties,” Gate answered.
“Okay,” Nine said again.
“You don’t have any questions before you agree?”
Nine thought for a second and then shook his head, “No. I get why you called me.”
“Come on in, and the two of you can talk it over. I haven’t told her anything about you, other than you’re a Marine. But her partner….”
“Isn’t the man for this job,” Nine supplied.
“No, and I’m not either. I’d kill a motherfucker for looking at her.”
Nine smirked, “And you want me to take her to a party full of drugs and sex?”
“I want you to protect her while she does what she needs to do,” Gate said.

Nine followed Gate into the living room and found Anna walking down the stairs in jeans, a tee shirt, and messy bun.
She looked good, and Nine could definitely see the appeal she held for Gate, but he wasn’t sure what he’d do if a woman he cared about had lied to him on the scale that Anna had.
But then, their history wasn’t any of his business, and he was glad of it.
“Hello, Nine,” Anna said, extending her hand.
“Anna,” Nine replied, shaking.
“Did Gate explain why he called you?” Anna asked.
“Why don’t you give me your version?” Nine replied.
Once seated with the niceties completed, Anna said, “Brent, my partner, and I have clearance to conduct an undercover assessment of Freemont’s trafficking parties. Our goal is to successfully infiltrate and obtain video surveillance of what’s actually happening inside.”
“This is stuff Stash and Rooster can’t get?” Nine asked Gate.
“Not inside,” Gate replied.
Nine turned back to Anna, “Where do I fit in?”
Anna glanced at Gate and went on, “Going into this kind of scene requires not only skill but a level of reality to fit in with these people.”
“And Brent doesn’t have it?” Nine asked.
Anna chewed her lip, “Brent’s a great partner, and he has a lot of talents, but….”
“Being in an extreme situation with a woman isn’t it,” Nine offered.
Anna shook her head, “He’d be the first to say so.”
“How believable do you want this to be?”
