“It was a possibility,” Margo shrugged. “And I didn’t want Talon to be the one to find me.”

Brick narrowed his eyes. “Why.”

“Because he’s already brought me back from the dead once, and I didn’t want him to have to do it again.”

Chapter Thirty-Four

Just Let It Go

Anna

As many times as I’d resented my house and what it stood for, for once, I was thankful for the monstrosity of a master bath suite that felt as big as a mausoleum when I was here alone, but suddenly seemed just right when it was overrun withgirlfriends.

Jenna, Layla, and Gabby had rolled in under the pretense ofhelping me get ready, and then Stella and Cassie had joined, and my walk-in closet had turned into a free for all with clothes and shoes flying, margaritas flowing, and Layla declaring that she was going tode-uptightthis bitch, to which I argued that I needed some uptight threads for work, so she slacked off. At least a little.

Then Cassie had pulled Stella aside, the two of them had said that they’d beright back, and we hadn’t seen them since.

Which brought us to now with Layla fussing with my hair and makeup, Jenna supervising in an armchair that we’d dragged in from the bedroom, Gabby pouring from a blender that she’d brought up from the kitchen, and me standing in a bra, panties, and silk robe.

“I get that this party is a big deal, but it’s for Jenna. She’s the one with the amazing news. All eyes are going to be on her, not me,” I said.

The brothers didn’t need much of an excuse to throw down a party at the compound, so when Talon had shared Jenna’s latest, Tex said barbecue, and everyone fell in line with the idea.

“While I appreciate the props,” Jenna started, “I’d say a majority of the eyes are going to be swinging in your direction, so you’ve got to look the part. Never know who’ll show up these days.”

Gabby topped off my drink and then stuck her head back into the closet. “You’ve got so manyclothes,” she said, eyes wide for emphasis.

“Yeah,” I sighed. “And I don’t even like half of them.”

“You trust me?” Gabby asked.

“Not even a little bit,” I laughed.

Jenna smirked, “Smart girl.”

Gabby plunked her margarita down on the marble countertop and headed into the closet, closing the door behind her.

“She’s not going to set anything on fire, is she?” I asked Jenna’s reflection in the mirror.

“Probably not this early in your friendship,” Jenna said. “But if she ever gets a wild hair for a science experiment in your kitchen, run.”’

“While you call 911,” Layla laughed.

Then she turned my shoulders toward the mirror.

“All done,” she said, smiling.

And the reflection looking back at me was me but not. It was the me of about two decades ago, all smokey eyes and lush curls. Layla had literally turned back the clock.

“I don’t know what you did, but I’m going to need you to stop by every morning before work,” I said. “Holy shit.”

Layla shrugged, “It’s all skin care and lighting. You know, colors and whatnot.”

“You’re brilliant,” I said, throwing my arms around her.

She squeezed me back and laughed, “Anything you want to know, I can teach you.”

“She is a jedi master,” Gabby called from the closet.
