Lizzie cocked her head and studied him, “You and Gate aren’t in the same club.”

“No, we’re not,” Maker said, watching the intelligence behind her eyes.

“But you called him brother,” Lizzie went on.

“I did,” Maker agreed.

Lizze’s brow furrowed, “Why?”

“Gate and I go way back. Further even than I go with the Bloody Saints.”

Lizzie nodded, “Does anybody else know that?”

“Just you and Smokey,” Maker said.

Lizzie glanced at the monitors again, “What would you be doing if I weren’t here?”

“Hunting,” Maker answered.

Lizzie leaned all of her soft skin and sweet scent into him, brushed her lips across his cheek, and whispered, “Then go hunting.”

Maker growled and crushed his lips against hers, twining his fingers in her hair like he’d keep her tangled with him forever.

And just as quickly as he started the kiss, he ended it and stood, settling her into the chair.

“You’re a grown woman, so you can watch if you want to, but I don’t want you scared of me, so really think about that before you do.” Maker pointed to a mini fridge, “There’s food and water.” Then Maker dropped his phone into Lizzie’s hand, “If something happens, call Gate. He’ll help you.”

And then Maker opened the door and faded into the dark.

Gate

Opening the front compound doors, Gate met two things at once.

The first was the scent of coffee. The brew at Anna’s was swank, but there was nothing like the swill Linda served in the early mornings. Thick as motor oil, it was strong enough to walk by itself, and it tasted like shit until it was doctored to hell and back. But that aroma alone was enough to get Gate firing on all cylinders.

And the second thing that greeted Gate was Stash and Rooster sliding to a stop in front of him before he’d even gotten off the entrance steps.

“Houston, we have a problem,” Stash started.

“Like, more of a problem than we usually have,” Rooster tacked on.

“This shit is outrageous, even for us,” Stash agreed.

Linda passed a cup into Gate’s hand.

He glanced down and could tell that she’d fixed it just the way he liked it.

“Thanks,” Gate mumbled taking his first sip.

“The way these two have been buzzing around all morning, I figure you need it,” Linda said over her shoulder as she made her way back toward the kitchen. “Your usual is up in two minutes.”

Gate looked around the empty room, “Let’s just do this in here.”

Gate settled at a square top with four chairs, and Stash set up the Mac and spun it around so that Gate could see the screen.

Rooster dropped a stack of printed pages on the table in front of Gate.
