“Is it always like this?” Gate asked under his breath.

Anna raised a brow, “This is nothing. Wait until Lucky eats all her cereal.”

“Jesus,” Gate muttered, scrubbing a hand down his face.

“I’m officially passing off the referee whistle to you now,” Anna grinned.

“Thanks,” Gate chuckled. “What are you gonna do?”

“Sit back with a glass of wine and be entertained.”

Gate leaned into her space to glide his nose across her cheek and up into her hair. “Anything for you, kitten,” he whispered in her ear.

“Oh, my God. Are y’all gonna be gross now?” Lucky asked from the floor, making gagging noises.

“Every chance we get,” Gate laughed, smacking a kiss on Anna’s cheek and leaning back into the cushions, pulling her with him.

Anna laughed, but then she settled against Gate’s chest. And when Stella turned out the lights and Lucky started the movie, Gate realized that the movie didn’t matter, Lucky and Stella both knew it, and that he was blessed as fuck to be sitting in the dark with the people he loved most in the world.

And that every twist and turn in the road was worth it. Because they’d all brought him to here.

Lucky

Family night had made him late, but Lucky grinned that Cassie hadn’t locked him out. Her lights were off, but the window opened on quiet hinges. He’d opened and closed it so often that it barely creaked anymore. Of course, the WD-40 he’d brought one night had helped.

He stepped into her room and slid the window closed behind him, careful to lock it now that he was here. Then he studied the bed, searching for her form in the shadows.

“Luck?” she whispered, her voice scratchy from sleep.

“I’m here,” he said, pitching his voice low and quiet.

“Lay with me?” she asked, holding out a hand toward him, reaching through the dark.

Lucky took a breath and then sighed. He was so tired, and he just wanted to hold her.

He slid his cut off his shoulders and folded it over the back of the chair where he usually slept. His shirt was next. The bed dipped under his weight as he sat to pull off his boots. He left his jeans on, knowing better than to get naked with a warm Cassie next to him.

Lucky laid back on the pillows, one arm out, and Cassie rolled into him like the space on his chest had been created for her to rest there. She kissed his chest, just above his heart, and then her breath evened out and fanned against his neck.

He pulled her closer, his hand stroking the soft skin under an old tee shirt of his that she insisted on wearing to sleep. Her weight relaxed against him, and he knew that she had already floated back into her dreams. He wondered if she’d even remember this in the morning.

And he figured she might not.

But he would.

Brick

“No, you’re not old enough to be my father,” Margo argued. “Maybe a really hot uncle though,” she shrugged.

And Brick couldn’t decide if he wanted to fuck her or strangle her. Or hell, maybe both. He figured she’d like a little rough with her sweet. He wasn’t even sure how she’d found him at the bar on River Street, but with the shit she was able to pull off, he shouldn’t be surprised.

The sound that rumbled from his chest could only be called a growl, and he did his best to sip his whiskey and ignore her.

But then she went and made that impossible.
