But he didn’t.

He stayed.

The whole time.

Even when he answered the phone to talk to one of the brothers.

And then when Jeanna had opened the Lil’ Rider 3 Wheel Chopper from me and Stella, she’d squealed with delight, and even Talon had thrown me a grin, and Gate’s chuckle had sent a delicious friction down my spine.

Now we were here, with the baby shower winding down, the brothers hauling presents to Talon’s truck, and me wondering what the hell was going on with Gate.

He stepped closer, so close that I had to stand up or let him touch me.

I opted for standing.

“Looks like I really will be going this time,” I said, snagging my clutch from the bar.

Gate propped both forearms on the bar, face turned toward me, “You don’t have to rush.”

And that’s when I made the mistake of looking at him.

Reallylooking at him.

Of course, I’d seen him over the years.

Birthdays, Christmases, graduations. So many different occasions.

But all those times, I’d put so much effort intonotpaying attention to him, to all that was the gloriousness of Gate, that I hadn’t studied him in what seemed like forever.

Years ago, we’d been two halves of the same body. So close that we practically shared a soul. I’d lived and breathed for him, and he’d done the same for me. And I knew it.

That was the best thing about being loved by Gate.

I’d never had to wonder how he felt. He made sure to tell me. To show me.

I’d never had to be jealous. I knew to the depth of my being that he’d never look at another woman.

I’d never had to fight for his attention. He gave it freely.

And in that moment, standing beside Gate at the bar in the common room of the Iron Dragons compound, everything I’d ever felt for him came rushing back, flooding my heart, and suddenly, I was drowning in emotion that had nowhere to go.

I blinked back the tears.

Gate frowned, “You okay?”

“Just gotta go,” I sniffed. “Thanks for the party. It was lovely.”

And I ran for the front door.

Gate

Gate watched Anna make for the door and admired the jiggle of her ass the whole trip.

Compound doors closed behind her, and Talon was at his side. “What’s there, Gate?” his vice-president asked.

Gate turned toward the party that the women were packing up and blew out a breath. “You got a minute for my office?”
