“Nope,” Stash corrected. “Genetic alteration and hormone replacement therapy. Very cutting edge. Barely legal.”

“Their clinical trials are suspect,” Rooster added.

“As in, if people knew what they were really testing and how they were making those tests happen, they wouldn’t just be in the jail,” Stash started.

“They’d be under it,” Rooster finished for him.

“So that’s where Edward set up shop,” Talon guessed.

“Not only that,” Stash said, “but Freemont bought up as much stock as he could, so now he holds thirty-two percent outright.”

“Swinging a pretty big bat,” Brick observed.

“Considering how many pieces of this particular pie exist, yes, he is,” Stash agreed.

“And this affects our situation how?” Gate asked.

“Buying shares gave Freemont a legitimate interest,” Rooster answered.

“Now, he’s on the books, and it’s legal. Even if what he’s processing isn’t,” Stash went on.

“A little bit of truth and a whole lot of lie,” Deuce nodded.

“Exactly. Edward has a real reason to be there, and no one is going to question his research when he’s backed by the biggest single shareholder and has such a renowned reputation,” Stash pointed out.

Gate rubbed a hand through the scruff on his cheek, “So if you found all his research, what’s he working on?”

“Lab trials, and they were all conducted on humans, indicate he’s created the ultimate high,” Rooster said.

“That vial that Cassie found?” Talon asked.

“Full of it,” Stash said.

“Fuck,” Talon breathed out, dropping his head to stare at his shoes.

Deuce crossed thick arms over his impressive chest, “Define ultimate high.”

Stash scrolled and pointed, “Psychotropic drug, can be ingested under the tongue, or intravenously for a quicker hit, produces nearly schizophrenic-like hallucinations….”

“Old man words,” Gate reminded the much younger video game developer.

Stash stopped and sighed. “Okay, Edward conducted real experiments on real people and kept real notes. Like, what I have right here,” he pointed to the screen, “would get his medical license pulled and put him in prison forever.”

Gate nodded, “Keep going.”

“The drug itself alters reality. You get the rush of meth, the calm of H, and the focus of coke. Basically, whatever you want is what you find. One hundred percent efficacy, zero side effects, meaning,” Stash held out a hand to Gate before he could interrupt again, “that it’s always effective and it never causes harmful side effects.”

“I feel abutcoming,” Deuce threw in.

“It’s the most highly addictive substance on the market,” Rooster whispered. “Ever.”

“And that’s how Freemont is gonna steal the trade from the Mancinis,” Talon said. “Get everybody addicted to something new, something tailor made, that they can only get from him.”

“He won’t have to fight a war,” Gate said. “The Mancini’s revenue will just dry up with their pipeline.”

“Exactly,” Stash agreed.

“So where do the girls fit into all this?” Talon asked. “Seemed like Freemont and Spider worked out a trade, but now it doesn’t seem like Freemont needed Spider after all.”
