Lizzie just shook her head and kept staring.

“Then why are you frowning?”

“I was imagining all the tanned women with long legs in miniskirts who must hang around the club all the time.”

“There are a few,” Maker admitted. “What’s that got to do with this?”

Lizzie shrugged and turned back to the stove to flip pancakes. The kitchen wasn’t that big, and Maker was currently taking up most of it, so there really wasn’t that far to go.

She felt more than heard him step closer.

Then she felt the heat of his body at her back, even though he didn’t touch her.

And she closed her eyes, silently hoping that he would.

He didn’t, but he spoke, low and soft, his voice a rumbly growl, “Tell me, Liz. What’s going on behind those chocolate brown eyes?”

She sighed. “Thank you for staying with me last night. I slept really well, and I feel so much better than I have in days.”

“You’re welcome, but not what I asked.”

She sighed again, bigger this time. “I really like this. I really likeyou. And I’m scared that if I tell you the truth, this,” she said, waving a hand over her shoulder, “will go away.”

“Not sure what you’ve got to say that’s that bad,” Maker growled. “but get it off your chest. I don’t like the frowning, and you’re cooking, so I’m not leaving.”

Lizzie pursed her lips, debating, and then spoke, keeping her eyes trained on the skillet in front of her. “Well, thinking about long tanned legs in miniskirts, prancing around the club, led to me thinking about them prancing in front of you, and I didn’t like that, and then I thought of your reaction to the prancing, and I liked that even less.”

Maker crowded behind her, his big body finally brushing against hers. He rested his chin on the top of her head and slid his arms around her waist. Then he bent lower and spoke into her hair, “There’s no prancing, sweet girl, although I’m very flattered that you think I’m worth the effort.”

Lizzie couldn’t stop the shiver than ran down her spine and the chills that raced down her arms.

She could feel Maker’s grin at her reaction.

“In case you’re wondering, my attention is pretty secured in one direction,” he went on.

“It is?” Lizzie whispered.

Maker slid his hands down over her hips, and Lizzie dropped her head back to rest against this chest.

“And it shows no signs of moving,” Maker whispered against her ear.

And didn’tthatmake her feel good.

“There’s this girl,” Maker started, “who throws me a little bit of sass and a whole lot of sweet. She’s got eyes that could melt a man, the most luscious ass I’ve ever seen, and she’s named after a movie star.”

His fingers worked their way back up, trailing up her arms to finally settle on her shoulders.

Heat flowed through Lizzie’s veins. Her breath went shallow, and she felt the blush of desire tinge her cheeks.

Maker nuzzled into her neck, “Thank you for letting me into your bed.” His lips grazed her ear, and he whispered, “Thank you for letting me hold you while you slept.”

“I slept really well,” Lizzie whispered back. “Thank you.”

“You’ll never know what it means to me that you trusted me to do that for you.”

Lizzie swallowed hard, “You won’t hurt me.”

“No, I won’t,” Maker agreed, skating his nose across the soft skin just under her ear.
