He straightened, “Now, we need to eat, and then we need to talk. Because if we don’t

stop, I’m gonna throw that pretty ass over my shoulder, haul you back to bed, and not let you up for air until it’s time for your next shift.”

Lizzie giggled.

And then she set about serving Maker the best breakfast he’d ever had in his life.

Anna

At the roar of a Harley in the driveway, Stella launched herself over the back of the couch and into the kitchen to meet her brother at the back door.

I leaned back against the island to watch the fireworks.

Same show every Sunday morning. With. Out. Fail.

Stella started before Lucky even got the door open, “You donothave permission to eat my cereal.”

Unperturbed by the little sister flip out, Lucky tousled her hair on his way across the kitchen to the Keurig. “Mom, Stella thinks she owns all the cereal in the house,” he said, opening a cabinet for a mug.

He found his favorite, a Tazmanian Devil ceramic I’d bought him at a Looney Tunes store when he was four. I was surprised it had survived his childhood. And his adulthood too, come to think of it.

Stella folded her arms across her chest and glared, “I don’t own all the cereal in the house. Justmycereal.”

Lucky doctored his coffee and grinned at his sister over the rim of his cup. “You pay for it?”

Stella rolled her eyes, “You know I didn’t.”

Lucky’s grin spread, “So that sounds like I ate Mom’s cereal, not yours.”

Stella turned to me while she pointed at him like he was something short of a science experiment, “Do something.”

Lucky talked over her, “This is my house too, Stell.”

“You only show up when you’re hungry, and you don’t even eat like a civilized person,” she huffed.

Lucky glanced at the Taz on his mug and grinned, “He always was my role model.”

Sensing that Lucky was about to get the best of his sisteragain, I interrupted, walking between them with my hands up, “Okay, fighters, back to your respective corners.”

Lucky kissed my cheek as I walked by, which only sent Stella sputtering.

“Ugghhhh, why does hedothat?” Stella asked. “You can’t get away with everything with a little affection, Luck.”

“My experience proves your theory wrong, little sister,” Lucky said, saluting her with his mug.

I gestured at Lucky with my own coffee mug, a fat bumblebee with the wordQueenacross the front, “Stop picking on your sister. And quit with the cereal. I listen to this every Sunday morning, and it’s getting old.”

Then the mom face to Stella, “And don’t be snotty. It’s still Lucky’s house. You both have rooms here, and you always will. And remember, men in your life will come and go, but your brother will always….”

“Be my brother, I know,” Stella finished for me.

“And you,” I said, turning to Lucky, “Women….”

“In my life will come and go, but my sister will always be my sister,” he said. “I know. You’ve told us a million times.”

“Well, maybe one day it’ll take,” I said. “Now, kiss and make up.”
