“Still think you could have sent Nine and gotten this done a whole lot faster,” Deuce threw in.

“Deuce, you have the subtlety of a sledgehammer,” Gate said.

“This trip has to be quiet,” Talon nodded.

Gate went on, “Things went the way they went with Talon and Sweet, and now Ryde’s got the perfect excuse for an extended ride and nobody give it a second thought.”

“Other than our brother looks like a pussy,” Deuce shook his head.

“I can’t believe you ever get laid,” Talon muttered.

“I’m just saying that’s the message sent,” Deuce defended.

“Message sent is our brother had feelings, things didn’t go his way, and now he’s taking a ride to get his shit tight. No harm, no foul,” Talon said.

Gate grinned, “But did you see him and that doctor?”

“Fuck, yeah,” Talon laughed. “He’s gonna be all over that when he gets back.”

“Maker’s little sister, huh?” Brick said. “Never woulda thought.”

“Me either,” Gate admitted. “Gonna talk to Ryde later today and see what’s what. I’ll mention the judge. Ryde can circle through Chattanooga and let us know what he hears.”

“Sounds good,” Talon agreed.

“Judge has put a mountain on offer,” Gate went on.

“We buying?” Deuce asked.

“Not exactly,” Gate answered. “He said if we ever need it, he’s got boys in the mountains that can handle a body.”

Talon whistled. “Damn. Old man’s hard core.”

“Why does he think we need it?” Brick wondered.

Deuce dropped his chair and leaned in, elbows to knees, “He knows what’s coming, doesn’t he?”

Gate nodded, “He’s got a good idea. Knows about our girls, knows about Spider’s drugs. And he’s got a hard on to keep Freemont out of Savannah.”

“And that’s where we come in,” Talon guessed.

“Yep,” Gate agreed.

“Not that I’m opposed,” Deuce said, “But what’s in it for us? Doing the judge’s dirty work, I mean.”

“He turns a blind eye to anything we have to do to make it happen,” Gate explained.

“Anything?” Brick asked. “Because I can come up with some nefarious shit.”

Gate shrugged, “His words. He’ll turn a blind eye to anything that comes across his desk with our names on it.”

“I say we take him up on it,” Brick said.

“Only if we need it,” Talon agreed.

“Still don’t like it,” Deuce argued. “Might feel better about it once we hear what Ryder’s got to say though.”

“Agreed,” Gate said. He turned to Brick, “We don’t come across needs like this much, but where we’re headed with Freemont, swamp might attract unwanted attention.”
