And every Sunday morning, thiswas the best part.

Lucky slammed his mug down on the counter and started for Stella, and she ran shrieking through the house.

I heard theNOOOOOOOOfrom the other end of the monstrosity and figured he must’ve finally caught her.

Then the laughter, and I knew the tickling had started.

Then theDAMNIT, STELLA, and I knew she’d finally gotten a good lick in and he’d quit.

Sometimes it took an elbow to the face. Sometimes a knee to the balls.

One thing I could say for Stella growing up with a brother like Lucky, no matter what any guy ever threw at her, she’d be prepared.

They came back into the kitchen out of breath and grinning like loons.

“You punch like a girl,” Lucky muttered.

“Stopped your ass, didn’t I?” Stella shot back.

Lucky threw his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close for about point five seconds. “Yeah, you did. Proud of you, Stell.”

She bumped into him with her hip, “You too, cretin.”

“Not sure what that means,” Lucky shrugged, “but it sounds like a step up from what you called me last week.”

“Pancakes or French Toast?” I asked, taking advantage of the lull in battle.

Once they agreed on French Toast and I got the batter started, Lucky settled in at the island with another Taz mug full of coffee and Stella went to check the new listings on Netflix.

I was mid-flip of a perfectly golden-brown masterpiece when Lucky spoke, “What’s with you and dad?”

I managed to keep the fried goodness in the skillet. Barely. “What do you mean?” I asked, keeping my back to him.

“Look at me, Mom,” Lucky said.

Damn, kid was smart.

I turned and tried for a blank face.

“Brent’s a cocksucker,” Lucky went on.

I arched a brow, “I’m sorry. Could you please put that in layman’s terms for those of us who don’t speak motorcycle club?”

“But that’s the thing, Mom. Youdo.”

I turned back to the stove and started a new batch. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Gonna be plain with you, Mom,” Lucky went on. “Brent’s not here. He’s never here. He doesn’t take care of you, and he does a shit job of protecting you and Stella.”

“I was unaware I needed taking care of, and I’ve got me and your sister. Next.”

“Sparks flying between you and dad at Sweet’s baby shower yesterday. That was some real chemistry.”

“Your father and I managed to have you guys,” I said, gesturing between him and Stella with the spatula. “Of course, we have chemistry.Hadchemistry.”

“Uh-huh,” was all Lucky gave me for that blunder.

“This is what I get for doing a good deed,” I mumbled, piling French toast onto plates. “I’m never stepping foot in that man’s presence again.”
