Gate snorted, thinking of his own relationship with Anna, “Trust me, I’ve seen weirder.”

“So what are you going to do about it?” Lucky asked.

“Do about what?”

Lucky leaned in and propped his arms on the table, “I asked her out about Brent at breakfast….”

“Oh, shit, son,” Gate interrupted.

“And then pointed out what I’d seen between you two yesterday….”

“Holy fuck,” Gate murmured, staring at the ceiling.

“And then she said she’d never set foot in your presence again,” Lucky finished.

“Did she now?” Gate asked, leveling his gaze again. “Is there anything else that you covered with your mom on my behalf that you might want to mention?”

Lucky shook his head, missing his father’s sarcasm, “Nah, I think that’s it.”

Gate left his chair and crossed to the single window that would have looked out over the side parking lot if it hadn’t been frosted so that no one could see inside the building. He scrubbed a hand down his face and was in the middle of talking himself out of giving Lucky the truth when Talon walked in.

Talon took in the scene and closed the door behind him, “So you told him?”

Lucky’s eyes narrowed on his father, “Told me what?”

Gate shot Talon a look, and then Talon said, “Guess not. No harm, no foul, right, Luck?” He slapped Lucky on the shoulder, “Now get outta my chair.”

Lucky stood and moved to his own chair further down the table. He dropped ass, and Gate could feel the hole his son stared through him.

“What’s the big deal?” Talon asked, picking up his meeting agenda. “What the fuck is this anyway?” he asked, waving the stapled papers around. “Makes me feel like I’m in a board room or some shit.” But he sat and started reading.

“Dad?” was the only word Lucky spoke.

“He’s about to hear ninety percent of it at the meeting. Might as well hit him with the other ten,” Talon said without looking up from the papers in his hand.

“Dad, what’s he talking about?” Lucky asked.

Gate sighed and ripped off the band aid he didn’t know had been covering a wound that had never healed. “Your mom and I are still married.”

Lucky’s brows rose nearly to his hairline, “What? How?”

Gate went on, “She never filed our divorce papers.”

“You’ve been married all this time?”

“Looks like,” Gate admitted.

“How could she do that to us?” Lucky asked, anger adding a sharp edge to his voice. “And who the fuck is Brent?”

“Brent’s her partner,” Talon threw in, still reading.

“Partner?” Lucky echoed. “Is that some kind of New Age thing?”

“FBI partner,” Gate corrected.

“My mother’s in the FBI?” Lucky’s eyes went as wide as dinner plates.

“She’s pretty badass at it too,” Talon filled in.
