Gate watched her fidget and then reallylookedat her. Pulse fluttering in her neck. Flushed cheeks. Eyes a little too wide.

And he realized that every time they’d been in the same room, this was the reaction he got. He’d always thought it was because she hated being around him and was anxious to leave, which pissed him off so bad, he usually ended up picking a fight.

But for the first time, Gate considered the possibility that it hadn’t been so much that Anna wanted to getawayfrom him as that being around him tore her up just as much as being around her did to him.

And then he moved in for the kill.

He stepped closer.

She stepped back.

He stepped again. So did she.

And then her back was against the brick of the building behind her and she didn’t have another step to take.

He braced a hand on that wall and leaned in.

Then his voice lowered about an octave, “Don’t leave.”

He watched the sweet spot on her throat as she swallowed. Hard.

“I’ve got court in the morning,” she offered, eyes darting everywhere but his face.

“I’ll get you home before ten,” Gate promised, guessing at what she might consider a decent hour.

“Well,” she started again, “Brent….”

“Isn’t home,” Gate finished for her.

She bit her lip.

He wanted to devour it.

“Come back,” Gate said. “It’s just dinner.”

Finally, Anna looked at him, and Gate saw the uncertainty in her eyes.

The desire.

The longing for something she wanted but didn’t think she could have.

And didn’t he know exactly how that fucking felt.

“I’ll be a gentleman. I promise,” Gate whispered.

Anna nodded, and fell into step beside him as they turned back toward Jenna’s house.

He thought he caught her words. They were so low he couldn’t be sure, but he could have sworn he heard Anna whisper, “You always were.”

Chapter Fifteen

Make It Bigger

Anna

Sitting at the breakfast bar, sipping my way through my fourth glass of wine, watching Gate and Talon talk shit while they put the finishing touches on dinner, I realized that the only way to survive my current situation was to keep drinking.

And then I glanced at Jeanna and caught her watching me with a certain glint in her eye, and it hit me.
