When my crying jag ended, I sniffed, and Jenna pointed to a door across the room.

“Bathroom,” she said. “Use anything you need.”

“Okay,” I mumbled, making my way across the room and wishing I could disappear into the carpet. Nothing like sobbing your eyes out to lose the excellent buzz you had going.

Now, my situation was crystal clear.

I was stuck at dinner with Gate, and even though I really liked Jenna, all I wanted to do was escape.

I liked Jenna even more when I found her cleansing wipes and luxe makeup products scattered across the vanity.

“You know what you need?” Jenna called from the other room.

“A vacation in Tahiti?” I guessed.

“Nope,” Jenna said, sticking her head into the bathroom. “A girl posse.”

My eyes went wide, “I’m not sure I can handle more of you.”

“Tonight was only me and a bottle of wine. Just imagine how much fun it’ll be with the rest of the girls andmargaritas.”

She breathed the last word like it was the holy grail and she was a knight on a quest.

I chuckled, “Missing cocktail hour?”

“Chips and guac just aren’t the same without them, you know?”

I dabbed at the streaks of mascara under my eyes, “I guess not.”

“Trust me on that one, sister,” Jenna said. Then, “I’m going to let you touch up. I’ll be downstairs. Take your time.”

She reached out and squeezed my arm before closing the door behind her.

And I stood in Jenna’s swank bathroom, staring at myself in her oversized mirror, and wondered what in the world made her want to be my friend.

Most of the time, I didn’t even like myself.

Jenna plowed into the kitchen, “We no longer have a code red. It’s a code yellow. Maybe even orange.”

“Do you have any idea what those colors mean?” Talon asked, glancing over his shoulder from where he pulled potatoes out of the oven.

“Not really. But they sound important,” Jenna answered.

Gate glanced at the ceiling, “She still upstairs?”

“Yeah, but she’s hurting. I thought, you know, maybe some wine, some girl talk.” Jenna shrugged, “But we need reinforcements.”

“Girl posse?” Talon asked, taking plates down from a cabinet.

Jenna nodded, “Girl posse.”

“What the hell’s that?” Gate asked.

Jenna answered while opening a drawer and gathering silverware. “The girls who have your back no matter what. They’ll drink with you, help you clean your house, and also tell you when your hair looks like a bird nest.”
