“That’s why we hit a wall. Blackmail.”

Gate

Half of Gate’s attention was on the conversation, and the other half was on his naked wife. He knew it and didn’t care.

But when she saidblackmailin connection with her people at the FBI, Gate’s focus riveted on her words and the implications they carried.

“You know what you’re saying?” he asked, praying she had enough self-preservation to avoid the situation entirely, but knowing her like he did, he knew he was pissing in the wind on that one.

Anna paled even further as she nodded, “Yeah. They got to someone. Which means that someone has been to one of the parties and knows they’ve got video, or someone was in on it to begin with.”

“What was your angle in the investigation?” Gate asked.

“The women. It was my job to find them and get them out. Brent focused more on the chain of command and finding where they were headed. Who was behind the operation.”

“And that’s why you passed intel on to Talon.”

Anna nodded, “It was the only way I could think of to help you and your girls without tipping my hand at the agency.”

Gate hummed low in his throat, “How do things stand now?”

Anna flopped back on the pillows, “Supposedly, my superiors want the drug boss, but with what I’ve just learned, I don’t think that’s the truth. They just want us called off the scent so the parties can go on. The girls were always secondary to them. Now I know why.”

Gate pulled her closer and kissed her forehead, “Now you know why.”

She settled against him, and that feeling curled low and deep.

The woman of his dreams was back again.

Skin to skin and soul to soul.

“We’re done with the easy,” he said against her hair. “Now, for the hard.”

He felt her go tense beside him, so he just held her tighter.

“Not getting away from me again, kitten. So just strap in for the conversation we’re about to have. And then it’ll be done.”

“Can we just go straight to thebe donepart and skip the conversation?” Anna asked, her voice no more than a whisper.

“If that’s what you want to do,” Gate said, hands gliding over her soft skin. “But it’ll always be there.”

“I don’t want any walls between us,” Anna admitted.

“Then tear it down,” Gate said.

“I don’t know where to start.”

“Start with what you’re most afraid of.”

Anna was silent for so long that Gate wondered if she had changed her mind.

When she spoke, her voice broke, “Can you ever forgive me?”

“That’s what’s got you so upset?” Gate asked.

She sniffed and buried her face deeper into his chest, nodding against him.
