“The enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that,” Deuce supplied.

“Exactly, to both,” Gate went on. “The judge knows what the Mancinis are bringing in, which he can handle. Freemont is a wild card, which he can’t. That man’s into some dangerous shit, at least in the judge’s eyes.”

“Difference between hookin’ and trafficking,” Talon observed.

“Difference between a woman’s choice and not,” Deuce nodded.

“All of our cards are on the table, boys, but I don’t think Freemont’s are,” Gate said, shaking his head.

“You think he’s got Fed weight behind him?” Brick asked.

“Afraid so,” Gate answered. “We just need to know whose weight it is.”

“And if we have any backup,” Brick added.

“Any thoughts on how to make that happen?” Tex asked the table.

No one answered, so Gate spoke to silence, “It’s getting late.” His eyes flicked to Ryder, “And some of us have places to be.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

And Be Her

Anna

“1800 Silver?” Layla asked, spinning on a platform sandal with the bottle in her hand. “Not bad. Glasses?” she asked.

I gestured to the cabinet beside the fridge, although I was better prepared for wine tastings than shots.

By the time I started to point that out, Jenna emerged from the butler’s pantry hauling the Breville Juice Fountain I’d bought five years earlier when I’d tried to go vegan, and Gabby followed her with the Ninja blender I normally used for iced coffees.

“It’s going down now, chicas!” Layla announced as she cut into a pineapple.

“Just leave the good stuff out of mine,” Jenna groused.

“What are you making exactly?” I asked, peering over Layla’s shoulder.

“Pineapple margaritas,” Layla answered. “Peel these,” she said, tossing oranges.

I juggled but managed and went to work on the cutting board.

“Nice digs,” Holly called from the den. “Does this place have surround sound?”

“Yeah,” I answered, glancing down at my juice slicked hands.

“Don’t worry,” Gabby threw over her shoulder, heading in Holly’s direction. “I’ve got this.”

“She’s recently taken up with Stash and Rooster,” Jenna whispered.

I flipped through my mental rolodex of brothers at the compound and came up with the wicked smart but fundamentally weird duo who always seemed to be laughing at an inside joke.

“Are they sane?” I whispered back.

“I heard that!” Gabby yelled from somewhere beyond my line of sight.

“Harmless,” Jenna answered, “unless you fuck with one of their own.”

I stared after Gabby, “And she’s withbothof them?”
