It Just Clicks, You Know?

Anna

“Layla, Stella and I both envy your sense of style, but I’ve got to tell you, I had no idea you were such an incredible bartender,” I said after yet another sip of pineapple margarita, only slurring some of the words.

And somehow, that was incredibly funny.

I giggled.

Layla studied me over the rim of her own glass, “Looks good on you, chica.”

“What does?”

“Drunk,” she answered.

“I’m notdrunk,” I argued, my mental processes slow enough that evaluating the truth of the statement was impossible.

“Okay, tipsy as fuck,” Jenna supplied, grinning.

I stirred my drink with the cute little umbrella straw Gabby had unearthed from the party supply stash in the pantry. “I might have to own that one.”

“Wonder what Gate’s gonna think?” Jenna mused aloud.

I frowned, “Why would he think anything?”

Gabby cocked an ear, “Because I do believe I hear the unmistakable growl of a Harley in the distance.”

I set my margarita down hard enough that the frozen goodness sloshed against the sides of the glass. “You do?”

“You don’t?” Jenna asked, standing from her chair.

“My ears are full of cotton. I can barely hear you,” I answered. “What are you doing?”

Layla and Gabby followed suit, stacking plates and gathering glassware.

“If you think we’re interruptingthis, you clearly don’t understand the code of the girl posse,” Jenna said.

“There’s a code? Do we have a handbook?” I stammered, my heart kicking into a higher gear in my chest at the thought of Gate showing up in the middle of the night.

Gabby paused, “A handbook.” She turned to Jenna and Layla on a laugh, “You know, that’s not a bad idea. Any newcomers get vetted and have to sign on the dotted line.”

“You guys really should think about it,” I said, following them through the back doors and into the kitchen. “You just can’t trust people these days.”

“We have Stash and Rooster,” Gabby pointed out. “They’re pretty thorough.”

I propped on the counter and watched the women tidy up the evidence of our impromptu soiree.

Layla wiping pineapple juice off the counter, Gabby loading our dishes into the dishwasher, and Jenna returning snacks to the pantry and fridge.

“They do background checks?” I asked, squinting one eye to focus.

“They can pretty much take over a government satellite and listen to conversations on the other side of the planet,” Gabby replied, a hint of pride evident in her voice.

“And all that techno shit turns heron,” Jenna supplied.

“Lots of people are smart,” Gabby pointed out. “But they’re smart the same way I’m smart, and it just clicks, you know?”

“No, I really don’t know,” I answered, swaying toward Gabby. “But I would be most interested in figuring it out sometime.” I clapped a hand over my mouth, “I’m so sorry. I didnotjust say that.”
