“What a bastard,” Layla added.

“It’s my own fault,” I said. “I should have known better. I know how these things work. I mean, he’s in a motorcycle club, for God’s sake. But I thought he remembered. I thought that’s why he asked me to meet him. And I could have stopped it. I just wanted him so much that Ididn’t.”

“So this is why your hair looks like a bird’s nest,” Layla observed.

Nothing like a best friend who’s been around for nearly thirty years. “Yep. I cancelled classes yesterday, stayed in bed, and watchedSons of Anarchy.”

Cassie shook her head, “That show gets you in trouble every time.”

I shrugged. It was true.

Layla slammed her coffee cup on the table and stood up, scraping her chair across the

floor. “I know what we need.” Layla pointed at me. “You, get your ass showered and dressed.”

“Why?” I mumbled.

“Brunch and retail therapy!” Layla exclaimed.

Cassie jumped up and did a happy dance around the kitchen. “Woo hoo! Shopping!”

I grinned at my girl. “Only for you, kid.”

Layla pointed toward the stairs, “Shower. Hair. Now.”

“Yes, ma’am,” I saluted, vowing to put Talon and his Harley behind me for good.

Talon

Talon pushed the weights over his head for the last rep of military presses, then let the bar drop, weights clanging together on the rubberized floor.

Ryder stood in the squat rack, enough weight on his back that it might as well be a small car.

Smoke worked a heavy bag while Lucky and Hatchet went toe to toe in the boxing ring.

Brick pushed a few hundred pounds on the bench, Tex spotting him.

Nine worked through some kind of martial arts no one else understood, and Stash and Rooster both ran on treadmills, like two hyped up hamsters.

Gate pushed through the double doors of the weight room, still dressed in jeans, boots, tee, and cut.

Talon racked his weights. “You get anything?”

“Hell, no,” Gate answered, disgust lacing his voice.

Brick and Tex switched places at the bench. “I asked around, off the grid,” Brick added. “Got nowhere.”

“Spider’s in the wind,” Gate said.

“Or he’s been removed,” Ryder said, mid rep. “That’s what I’d do.”

“Ryde’s got a point,” Brick added. “Easiest way to cut into our territory is off Spider and blame him for it. Dead men don’t talk.”

“We’ll keep looking. Someone knows something,” Talon added.

“Hookers are back out tonight,” Gate told the room at large. “We need more boots on the ground than Talon’s. He can’t protect those women alone.”
