“Let me finish.” Gate paused, and when Jenna kept her mouth shut, he continued. “You’re gonna keep this marker on the chance that one day you might really need it. I’m gonna give you your article for free.”

“You are?” Jenna breathed. “But why?”

Gate looked down at his desk, his eyes catching on his name plate.PRESIDENT.

“When you saved his life, you did something for this club we can’t ever repay. So Talon’s not paying his marker. I’m paying mine.”

Jenna looked like she was about to speak, but Gate continued. “What’s your best idea about how to make it happen?”

Jenna rushed through before he could change his mind. “Small scale, personal interviews. Your choice about who I talk to. I’d like to document the interviews, for my own records, and then you’ll have final approval of the article.”

“That means you go with it if I like it.”

“Exactly,” Jenna nodded. “I can draw up a contract if you’d like.”

“We can shake on it,” Gate said, extending his hand.

Jenna reached out and then pulled back. “Two things,” she said.

Gate raised his brows, “What are they?”

“One, don’t put Talon on the list of interviews. And two, don’t tell him who I am. Our history. Just leave it alone.”

Gate crossed his arms over his chest. “Brother really fucked up, didn’t he.”

Jenna tilted her head, studying the man across from her.

Gate watched emotions play over her face. Indecision. Doubt. Courage. Honesty.

“Just so you know where I stand with this,” Jenna began, “he humiliated me. I was stupid, so it’s as much my fault as his, and I’ll own that. But I’d really like to avoid repeating it.”

The honesty snagged him. The responsibility she took over something he was pretty sure was all on Talon clutched him in a way he hadn’t felt in a very long time.

So Gate made another decision.

“I’ll keep Talon away from you, but the only way you’re going to do this scene justice is to become part of it,” Gate said.

Jenna’s eyes went wide.

Gate kept talking, “So you’re not doing small, personal interviews. You’re gonna be here every chance you get, talking to anyone you want, like you belong here.”

Jenna’s breath shuttered, “That’s beyond anything I ever hoped for.”

Gate extended his hand again, “Now, do we have a deal?”

Jenna shook with enthusiasm, “Yes, we do.”

Jenna snagged the necklace off the desk as Gate stood and crossed his office.

“Now, gotta get you a tour guide,” Gate said, opening the door. “Ryder!” he bellowed down the stairs.

Jenna heard a muffled response, then boots on the stairs.
