“Fucking you wouldn't be a mistake,” he told her with a dark smile. “Fucking you hard enough to make you scream and ruin your reputation among your colleagues would be. Now hurry up, we have somewhere to be, sugar.”

When she saluted him, he felt himself skid off the incline into love.

It was weird and slightly nerve-wracking to step out of her office with Thane behind her. Although she was fully dressed, almost immaculately so, and she'd taken the time to brush out the craziness of her hair, Connie couldn't rid herself of the feeling that everyone would know as soon as they saw her, what she'd been up to and what was shoved up her butt.

Shauna's eyes lit up the moment they landed on Thane, then she tried to be professional. “Are you finished for the day, Doctor Monroe?”

With her lover's hand on the small of her back, Connie managed to stop obsessing over the anal plug stretching her open and smile at the younger woman. “I am. Could you ask the cleaning crew to pay special attention to the carpet, couch, and coffee table? There was an accident with a bottle of juice, and it's gotten everywhere.” She rolled her eyes in exasperation.

“Absolutely.” Long nails clattered on a keyboard as Shauna emailed off the directive. “Is there anything else you need me to do for you before you go?”

“That's it, thanks. I'll see you on Thursday?”

“I'm scheduled for Thursday and Friday, but Abby's sick, so I might be here all week.” Shauna smiled, obviously pleased with her co-receptionist's demise. She was in college and needed the money, so what was a crap time for Abby was an extra few paydays for Shauna. “I hope you have a good evening, Doctor.”

“I will. You, too.” Pressure from Thane's hand steered her away as heat filled her face. She let him guide her to the elevator, her steps short and awkward. The damn toy couldn't fall out, she knew that, but her imagination was good enough to conjure how many ways it could escape her snug asshole, bypass both her panties and pants, and slide down her leg to fall on the floor. “Am I as red as I imagine?”

Thane turned her to face him as they waited for the elevator, scrutinizing her face intently. Leaning in close, he narrowed his eyes, tilting his head curiously. “Definitely flushed,” he murmured, nibbling on her bottom lip. “Maybe I should take your temperature, sugar. I've got a rectal thermometer in my—”

“No!” She stepped back and crossed her arms over her chest, scowling.

“You're delicious when you blush. Makes me want to lick every inch of you and see how radiant your skin becomes.” He ushered her into the elevator when the doors pinged open. They slid shut as he pressed the button for the ground floor. “So, you've locked Evan into a box you're not going to open again. Admirable but risky. Do you think you've neutralized those memories enough for them to stay down?”

Connie blinked. Where the hell had that train of thought come from? The use of Evan's name slammed into her, making her cringe. That should have been an indication she hadn't resolved that issue as well as she should. The lie was on the tip of her tongue, ready to divert his attention, but she was baffled to discover she couldn't lie to him. She just couldn't, not even to spare herself the discomfort of talking about Evan the asshole. “No. They'll stay in the box for as long as it holds. When it breaks open again…maybe I'll be in a better place to handle them, once and for all.”

“Okay. Thank you for not lying to me, Con.”

“You knew?”

“That you were considering it? Yeah. I know your face now, sugar. I've learned how to read you, and you've got tells. Small ones,” he acknowledged, “but tells all the same. I'm glad you feel comfortable telling me the truth.”

She watched the buttons light up as they descended each floor, bracing for the bump of the elevator stopping. When the doors opened, she took his hand so they walked out together. “You grow on a woman, Thane. It's kinda hard to lie to someone when it feels like they're as much a part of you as one of your limbs.”

“That's the sweetest thing you've ever said to me. Thank you.” He was so sincere, his eyes alive with pleasure.

Her heart hurt. She'd forgotten what it was like to make her Dominant happy without trying, how warm and light his approval made her feel. It was like stepping into a hot tub and sinking up to her neck in the heat, letting the water soothe all the nasty irritated edges.

They were in this together now, she realized. All the time they were spending in each other's company was quickly solidifying into a strong, attainable bond she didn't want to lose. Relying on him was wrong—Thane didn't deserve to bear all her weight when she stumbled—but being with him was absolutely astounding.

As they walked out onto the sidewalk, Connie tipped her head back to gaze up at the sunny sky. Basking in the warmth of the sun, with her hand clasped in Thane's. If she could block the fullness in her rear from her thoughts, it would be pretty damn perfect. “Where are we going with this, Thane? I mean, what do you want from it?”

He hummed thoughtfully, tugging her hand so she followed him down the sidewalk. “Do you want the safe answer, or the oh fuck, maybe I shouldn't have asked that honest answer? Because I can give you either.”

A car drove past, windows down and music blaring. There were people scurrying around like ants, going about their day, and Connie frowned as she realized she wanted honesty. They were cruising into their third week together and, somehow, it seemed like a lifetime had passed already. The time for half-truths and placations was over. They were adults, they knew the value of communication and the truth. “What would the safe answer be?”

He chuckled. “Safety first, huh? Okay. That would be, I like where we are now. I'm not really looking at the future because I don't know what it will bring. I just want to enjoy the time I have with you and see where we go from here.”

Her lip curled. Yeah, that was as safe as it got. There was no commitment, no certainties. Just a blanket response that didn't satisfy what lurked beneath her skin. The need for more. The desire to be with him. “Uh-huh. Yeah, that doesn't make me want to jump for joy, Thane.”

“Me either,” he said jovially, grinning at her.

Connie dodged behind him as a teenager on a skateboard whizzed past, almost colliding with her. Cursing, she clamped her ass cheeks together, imagining the butt plug firing from her butt and knocking the boy off his skateboard. The sudden movement teased her sensitive inner tissues, making her moan. “Give me the honest answer.”

“The oh fuck, maybe I shouldn't have asked thatanswer? Are you absolutely sure you want to go there, sugar?”

She hesitated, then nodded firmly. Might as well figure out where she stood with him before her heart did the stupid thing and fell headlong in love with the jackass. If she was just a challenge, a project dumped in his lap, she'd rather know now so she had a fighting chance of pulling herself back from the ledge.
