Page 53 of Sleep for Me

It wouldn’t be a hardship.

Finally, she blinked at him. “My mind’s gone blank, I can’t think of anything. Surely there must be something I need to ask?”

She was adorable when she was flustered, Saul thought. That mouth of hers had the potential to get her into trouble, lots of it. Thinking of how he could reprimand her when it did, he realized she hadn’t yet broached the subject of her spanking.

She would, if it had stirred her curiosity.

“They’re your questions, bunny. I can’t ask them for you.”

“There are too many of them.”

“No, you’re complicating the situation. Simplify it. There’s only one question you need to worry about right now. What is it?”

Her brow furrowed. Twice, her lips moved as though rehearsing lines. In the end, she composed herself, sitting straighter and inhaling deeply. “Do you think I’m ready?”

She was a quick learner, a trait he enjoyed in a woman. It made him wonder just how quick and eager she would be under his hand, as his submissive rather than simply his lover. There would be hesitation—there usually was with a new sub, at least in the first few weeks—but he believed she would be both a delight and a challenge to play with. Once he had her absolute trust, he could show her things that would blow her perception of sex out of the water.

Her submission would be hard won, but worth every moment.

“Not quite, little rabbit, but you’re not a million miles from the goal.”

Caera slept until almost noon in a series of broken dreams, distressing loops of the memory of Darius and the woman, and the voices that wouldn’t leave her alone. Feeling tired and weary down to the bones, she laid in the empty bed, listening to Saul talking to someone.

The tenderness in her ass was still lingering, but she supposed it would have been worse if Saul hadn’t taken the time after they’d gotten out of the hot tub to lather her butt in some kind of anointment.

The spanking had been rough on her—emotionally as well as physically, maybe more. With every strike of his palm on her skin, he’d slapped the emotions until they retaliated, bottlenecking inside her until he forced the bottle to pop the cork.

Unfortunately, she’d been the bottle.

It had been strangely arousing. She could admit that now she was alone without Saul reading her mind. The impact of his hand had mimicked what she imagined sex would feel and sound like. The heat building beneath her skin, seeping into her muscles, had fired straight between her legs, although she hadn’t paid much notice then, not when the world as she saw it was tumbling away in pieces beneath her feet.

It also added weight to her theory that Saul was involved in a different lifestyle.

Not that she had any experience, but it seemed to her that the way he’d manhandled her over his thighs and kept her there indicated it wasn’t his first time at that particular rodeo. He’d been confident, sure of his every move, measuring the blows and spacing them out over all of her available flesh, not just one spot.

The water and the chocolate?

The cuddles and the blanket?

Saul was definitely in the different category.

Caera rolled over and gave thought to trying to sleep again, but her eyes landed on Saul’s phone. He had to be using the one in the office for his call. Anxiety fluttered in her stomach as she remembered Connie’s bombshell theory about Caera’s parents.

She really should make a call of her own, but was she strong enough?

Whatever her parents told her, it might unravel the rest of her sanity and leave her with nothing, but…deep down, she understood there was something very wrong with her life. There was a place it all rooted from, those roots dying the further they grew away from the truth, and in turn, it was killing her.

She hadn’t broken down yesterday because it felt like a possibility she was adopted. No, she wasn’t that kind of woman. She’d reverted back to her shutdown ways because Connie had poked at and riled suspicions Caera had tried desperately to bury where she couldn’t dwell on them.

Maybe it was time to put them to bed once and for all.

Slipping out of bed naked, she dressed in jeans and T-shirt. There was a slight chill in the air that there hadn’t been the day before, and she was prone to feeling cold if there was even the slightest breeze. A consequence of being malnourished, she guessed.

Retrieving her phone from the nightstand, she wandered over to the office door and gave Saul a quick wave to let him know she was up. The smile and quick wink he gave her made her all warm and fuzzy inside, as did his silent gesture for her to eat something.

Nodding, she crossed back through the bedroom into the bathroom, going through the motions of brushing her teeth, peeing—in the toilet, this time—and washing up. Her parents wouldn’t be able to see her when she called, but at least she felt presentable.
