“Me? Nah,” I shrug.

“Oh really?” She chuckles, “Because the wretched sounds coming from your side of the truck tell a different story.”

“Ehh, who needs food to survive?” I quip. “I’ve got the endurance of a lion. I actually thought about signing up for one of those shows where they drop you off in the wilderness and the last man standing wins an outrageous amount of money. I’m just afraid I would instantly become famous after one episode, and I’m a rather private guy. I wouldn’t do well with all the attention,” I flash her a cocky wink, a sly smile stretching across my lips.

Her eyes narrow to little slits.

“Are you talking about the showNaked and Afraid? If so, I’m positively sure of two things. Number one, you most certainly would be nakedandafraid. And number two, you might get famous for your embarrassingly loud stomach growl, but that’s about it.” She crosses her arms over her chest, arching a brow as she flashes me a cheeky grin.

“Really?” I scoff. “I was thinking my sculpted body and tight ass is what would be my claim to fame.” I can practically hear her rolling her eyes at my sarcasm.

“You know,” she croons, “you and your brother reallyaren'tthat different,” she adds, narrowing her eyes. “You’re both full of yourselves and a little narcissistic if I’m being honest.” Her lips turn up in a devious smile. She knew that comment would sting.

“See, that’s where you’re wrong,” I shake my head. “The difference between me and my brother is that I know how to separate a joke from reality. Elliot truly thinks that his shit doesn't stink. He gets a hard-on anytime he sees a reflection of himself,” I scoff.

“Okay, but that’s kind of true,” she chuckles. “I’ve never seen someone spend as much time in front of a mirror as he does.”

“Exactly my point,” I nod.

“So uh… What’s the deal between you two? You act like you hate each other’s guts. I mean, you’re brothers for Christ's sake.” She’s staring at me intently, like she really doesn’t have a clue in the world.

“So since we’re brothers, we automatically have to be best friends?”

“No… I’m not saying that,” she sighs. “But you can at least try to be civil with one another.” Her brows pinch together in thought before she continues. “Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you guys have a casual conversation. It’s just… It’s obvious that there’s this never-ending war going on between you two.

“He never told you?”

Her eyes snap to mine.

“No, never,” she immediately responds, her tone serious as she slowly shakes her head.

Of course, he didn't. He wouldn’t risk exposing the snake beneath his golden boy façade.

“Why does that not surprise me?” I scoff.

“What happened?” Skylar pushes.

“No talking about the past, remember? Plus, why don’t you just ask yourfiancé.” I can’t hide the disgust dripping from my tone as I pronounce the last word.

“What happened between you and Elliot… Does it have anything to do with us? With me?” I know what she’s asking, and unfortunately, the answer is no. I wish it had everything to do with her because that would mean she made a different decision when she had the chance. But instead, she chose him.

“No, it was before he met you,” I mutter.

“Then why can’t you just tell me? It’s obviously in the past.”

Because I’ve spent years learning how to stop ruminating on it, to not wake up every day and remember what he took from me without an ounce of regret. That’s what bothers me the most about my brother. The fact that he doesn’t have the balls to apologize, or even own up to what he did.

“Have you ever asked Elliot to tell you?”

“Yes… He said that you’ve never really gotten along, but I’m smarter than that. There’s obviously more to the story,” she replies, shifting in the seat to angle her body towards me.

I feel her gaze lick against my skin like a heat wave.

“I’ll make you a deal,” I sigh, “grab the snacks out of the backseat and I’ll tell you. They’re in the yellow grocery sack.”Anything to distract her.

“Deal,” she says enthusiastically, briefly unbuckling her seatbelt to reach behind the seat and grab the flimsy grocery bag.

I catch a glimpse of her heart-shaped ass in the rearview mirror, looking so damn perfect in her tight little jeans. I try not to think about how her ass is mere inches away from my face as she digs around in the back seat. I peel my eyes away because there would be no hiding the evidence of a boner in the forced proximity of my truck, especially in broad daylight.
