I don’t even feel bad for lying to her because I had to. What was I going to say?Sorry, I wasn't paying attention because I was captivated by how sexy you look in my truck, imagining how wet you would be for me if I touched you.Yeah, never admitting that.

“I’m fine,” she groans, wiping the sleep from her eyes. “What a way to wake up, though,” she scoffs.

“It was about time for you to wake up, sleepy. You were snoring like a freight train,” I smirk.

“I was not,” she huffs as the cutest scowl etches across her face.

“Well, by the looks of this traffic, you should probably just go back to sleep.” I gesture my hand toward the never-ending line of vehicles in front of us.

“I wonder if there was a wreck?” She asks while rolling down her window. She pops her head out into the frigid air to see around the car in front of us.

“Or it could be the weather,” I add. Since we’re basically not moving, I pull my phone from the cup holder and load the weather app. As soon as it loads, it tracks our current location as an alert flashes across the screen.

WINTER STORM ALERT: Winter Weather may impact travel. Conditions may include heavy snow, sleet, or freezing rain. Avoid travel if at all possible.

I scroll up on the map to find that the weather just gets worse further north, which is bad news for us because that’s exactly where we’re headed. It’s been lightly snowing for the past hour, but the roads have seemed fine.

“Dammit,” I curse under my breath, running a hand through my hair.

“What is it?” Skylar asks, concern evident in her tone.

“Looks like the weather isn't looking good in the direction we’re headed. That’s why there’s traffic.” I shake my head.

“Surely the traffic will clear up,” she sighs. “I mean, you still think we’ll make it to Denver tonight, right?” Her question comes all rushed and panicky.

“I don’t know.” I let out a frustrated sigh. “This is exactly why we needed to leave on time today.”

She scoffs, arching her brows as she shakes her head. “Oh, so you’re going to put all the blame on me? I can’t control the weather, Everett.”

“Yes, Skylar. I am,” I exhale. “We left almost an hour behind schedule becauseyoucouldn't wake up on time. Not to mention, we had to stop and spend half an hour eating inside rather than running through a quick drive-thru so you could ‘stretch your legs’. So yes, I’ll happily put the blame on you.”

Her shoulders stiffen as she narrows her eyes.

“Really?” She huffs. “We both know that one hour wouldn't have made a difference either way. As a matter of fact, you’ve known for days that the forecast was calling for bad weather, yet you decided to still make the trip.Youstillwanted to take your chances. So if you want to blame anyone, blame yourself.”

“Well, I guess we'll never know, huh?” I snap. “But what I know for sure is that we got a late start because ofyou, and now we’re here sitting in standstill traffic.”

Is comfortably arguing with someone a thing? Why the hell do we sound like a bickering couple who’s been married for years?

“You know what?” She huffs, her cheeks flushed with scarlet. “I think I will go back to sleep. Anything’s better than conversing withyou.” She angrily unzips her bag resting on the floorboard before pulling out a small white case.

“You’re feisty after a nap,” I quip, clicking my tongue as I toss her a wink.

“Can’t hear you,” she hums, rolling her eyes. Sliding in her earbuds, she reclines her seat all the way back before propping her feet up on the dashboard and closing her eyes.

Fuck,it’s infuriating how cute she is when she’s mad. It makes me want to rile her up just to watch her roll those ocean eyes at me. It makes me want to wrap her in my arms, seal my lips to the soft skin of her neck, and make her forget why she was even mad in the first place.

Any man who wouldn’t worship the ground this woman walks on is out of their fucking mind.Deep down, maybe that’s why I hold so much resentment toward my brother.

An hour later,we’re still sitting in traffic when my phone rings through the Bluetooth speakers. A random number that I don’t recognize flashes across the dashboard screen. I usually don’t answer unknown callers, but I’m on high alert since Noah and Liam are running the business alone this week.

I turn my head towards Skylar to see that her eyes are closed, her headphones still resting in her ears. Thankfully, she’s not paying any attention to me, so I decide to take the call over the speakers.

“Hello?” I answer, hesitant to say my name.

“Uh… Hi, is this Everett?” A soft feminine voice flows through the speakers, sounding nervous.
