“Sir? Sir? Sir?” I think I hear a voice in the distance.

My eyes flicker down to Skylar’s neck as I imagine sinking my teeth into her soft skin before soothing the sting with my tongue.

“Excuse me,” the voice continues.

My gaze trails back up to her full lips, imagining her tongue tangling with mine. I can almost hear her soft moans as my tongue licks into her mouth, sliding against hers.

I’m startled by a light shove against my back, breaking my trance.

“What the hell, man? You’re holding up the line.” An irritated voice booms behind me.

I look up to find the receptionist staring straight at me with her hands braced against the counter, a scowl etched across her face.

Shit. Shit. Shit. She’s been trying to get my attention while I’ve been blatantly eye fucking Skylar. I exhale a deep breath, running a hand through my hair.

“I’m sorry… I spaced out. It’s been a long day” I turn, offering the guy behind me an apologetic smile before stepping up the counter. I hear him mutter a string of curses but choose to ignore it. I’d be pissed off too if I were him. It feels like it’s barely twenty degrees in this lobby.

“I’m sorry, ma’am,” I mutter to the receptionist, keeping my eyes down.

She pulls a cigarette between her wrinkled lips, taking a drag as she blows a puff of smoke right in my face. A cough catches in my throat as I close my eyes and try to swallow it down.

“I’m guessing you need a room?” She rasps, completely ignoring my apology.

“Yes,” I nod.

“Well, it’s your lucky night,” she clicks her tongue. “We’ve got one room left.” I close my eyes, letting out a sigh of relief.

“Thank God,” I mutter under my breath.

“It’ll be eighty dollars for the night.” She takes another drag of her cigarette, tapping her long nails against the counter.

“That’s fine. I’ll take it,” I respond without hesitation.

“I’ll need a copy of your driver’s license and an active card to put on file. You’ll be charged at check out.”

“Of course, no problem.” I dig into my pocket as I reach for my wallet. I pull out my license and credit card before handing them over to her. She takes my cards from me before looking over my shoulder to address the line of people waiting behind me.

“We’re all booked up!”She shouts. “There’s another motel twenty miles north. Best of luck to ya.” She puts out her cigarette in an ashtray on the counter before she begins typing my information into the computer, completely ignoring the expletives being spewed behind me.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“This place is a hell hole.”

“Just my fucking luck.”

The rambling continues from multiple angry travelers until the voices die out. A wisp of frigid air fills the lobby as the last person leaves, slamming the door behind them.

The receptionist finally stops typing and hands me back my cards. She reaches behind her, extending a hand towards a small key attached to a hook on the wall.

“You’re in room forty. Check-out time is eleven a.m.” She hands me the key, pointing her finger in the direction of the lobby window as she gestures to the run-down building beside the motel.

“If you’re hungry, you can walk over to Willie’s Bar and Grill. They stay open until midnight and believe it or not, they cook up some damn good food.”

I don’t doubt her for a second. It’s always the hole-in-the-wall restaurants that seem to have the best food.

“Thank you, ma’am. I appreciate it.” I nod, raising a hand in farewell as I turn and head for the door.

“One more thing,” she adds, holding up a finger.
