Skylar

“Hello?” I hold the phone to my ear, retreating off the dance floor.

Luckily, I find an empty barstool across the room from where Everett is standing. After what almost just happened between us, the last thing I want is for him to have to overhear a conversation between me and his brother.

I clear my throat, hoping Elliot won’t notice how breathless I am. I’m still trying to come back down to reality.I still feel the lingering heat of Everett’s strong body swaying against mine.

“Hey, Skybear.” I roll my eyes.I hate that stupid nickname.I’ve told Elliot a million times that I can’t stand when he calls me that. It sounds like something a parent would call their toddler.

“Uh… Hi,” I reply hesitantly. I amnotabout to ask him how his day was, especially when I know he’s safe in Denver. I still can’t believe that it took him this long to call me.

“What are you up to?” He asks nonchalantly, like he doesn't have a care in the damn world.

My jaw drops… literally drops to the floor. What are you up to?Of all the questions he could ask me, he goes with that.

Not, How’s the drive? Are you okay? Why aren’t you at the hotel yet?

I close my eyes, shaking my head as I pinch the skin between my brows. Does he even remember that I’m supposed to arrive in Denver tonight?

“What am I up to?” I scoff, trying my best to keep my voice down.

“Hmm, where do I start?” I add sarcastically. “The highway was shut down this afternoon due to a literal fucking blizzard, and now I’m stranded in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico, with your brother. We’re staying in a motel that reeks of cigarette smoke and mold. The highway doesn't open back up until tomorrow, so we’re stuck here for the night.”

“So,” I exhale a frustrated breath, “that’s what I’m up to, Elliot.” My nostrils flare as my chest heaves with irate breaths. I can practically feel my blood boiling in my veins.

“Damn, that’s crazy,” he drawls out.

Damn, that’s crazy. That’s all he has to say? My vision goes blurry. I’m so pissed that I can hardly see straight.

“Are you shitting me, Elliot?” I snap. “Today has quite literally been one of the worst days of my life and all you have to say isdamn, that’s crazy? Did you forget that we were driving to Denver today? I’m supposed to be arriving at the hotel any minute now, and you’re justnowdeciding to call? Great timing,” I scoff.

“Why are you so worked up? I’ve been busy with work today. You know I care, Skybear,” he sighs pathetically.

“Donotcall me that,” I say through clenched teeth.

“I’m sorry, I forgot,” he huffs.

“About what, Elliot? Did you forget about the fact that I despise that stupid nickname or that I was coming to Denver today?”

“The nickname, Skylar,” he clarifies. “I knew you were coming in today, that’s why I called.”

“Yeah, sure,” I scoff.

“Skylar…”

I don’t respond, because I don’t know what to say. So I just shake my head, letting out a frustrated sigh. It doesn't take long until Elliot starts up again.

“Look, I can tell that you're upset with me, and I’m sorry,” he says unapologetically. “Today was a busy day, and I’m about to meet a potential client for drinks, so I’ve got to run. I wish we had more time to talk, but I’ve been preparing for this meeting all week. I’m glad you’re okay, and I can’t wait to see you soon, babe.”

He always does this. Anytime I get upset, he downplays my emotions and tries to act like everything is just fine and peachy.

“Whatever, Elliot,” I respond in a defeated tone.

“Do me a favor,” he mutters quickly, “call me before you get here. I want to make sure I’m at the hotel to greet you when you arrive tomorrow. I’ve missed you more than you know.”

I roll my eyes, not buying his sentimental bullshit.
