You’ve got to be shitting me.

“Hold on… Why can’t she ride with you?”

“Because I’m already in Denver for work. I’ll be here until the wedding next week,” he responds.

“Then book your fiancé a flight. That’s the least you could do with your six-figure salary you’re always bragging about,” I argue.

“Oh,trust me, I would have her flying first class if I could. But she crafted signs and decorations for the wedding. She has boxes of breakable items she’s bringing with her. Therefore, flying isn't really an option. You both have to haul things for the wedding, and you have a big truck that can withstand bad weather and carry everything you’re bringing. It works out perfectly for both of you. I don’t understand why you’re being such an asshole about it,” he says in a clipped tone.

Dammit, he’s right.

How could I say no? I mean, I actually have a pretty damn good reason to say no, but I’m pretty sure Skylar would rip my head off if I told Elliot. God, there’s been so many times I wanted to tell him, just to wipe that arrogant smile off his face.

Besides, I would feel like complete shit if anything happened to her. I would never forgive myself. Just the thought of Skylar driving alone through hundreds of miles of empty highway makes me uneasy. Not only is there a chance of ice and snow, but I also have a tendency to not trust anyone. There are too many fucking creeps in this world.

“Has Skylar even agreed to this?” I ask, hoping like hell she hasn't. Honestly, I would be highly surprised if she did.

“Yup, just got off the phone with her. She’s already planning on it,” he responds without hesitation.

I get the feeling that she definitely didnottake the news that well, especially with our history. Skylar and I have barely spoken a word to each other in three years, and when I do see her at family functions, we avoid each other like the plague.

I take a deep breath, running my hand through my hair.

Fucking hell. I’m going to say yes.

“Tell her I’ll pick her up on Thursday at six a.m. sharp. Not a second later. I don’t want to be driving in the dark, especially if there’s ice on the roads,” I respond in defeat, shaking my head as my heart hammers against my chest.

I’m about to be stuck in a vehicle with Skylar Wood for twelve long hours.

I wish this was just a bad dream, but instead, it’s my worst fucking nightmare.

“Awesome. I knew I could count on you, my trustybig bro,” he says in a sarcastic tone. This piece of shit isstillgoing to try and belittle me even after I agreed to drive his fiancé eight hundred plus miles.

“Glad I can at least be the reliable one in the family,” I quip.

“Nice catching up,” he replies, completely ignoring my comment. “I’ll let Skylar know,” he quickly adds before ending the call.

The fucker didn’t even have the decency to say thank you or even goodbye before he just hung up on me.

Does he treat Skylar like this?Just the thought makes my vision blur with red.

Why do I even care? They can happily put up with each other’s bullshit for all I care. She’s his and he’s hers. She made that clear to me years ago.

THREE

Skylar

It’s the night before Everett is supposed to pick me up for our road trip. I’m sitting here cross-legged on the sofa, staring blankly at my bookshelf. Today is technically my first day of vacation, but I’ve tried to keep myself as busy as possible to avoid thinking about tomorrow.

I spent the morning running errands and packing my suitcase, and the afternoon consisted of me cleaning the condo from top to bottom until my limbs started to ache. I even called my mom and had a three-hour conversation with her to help to fill the time. Hearing her sweet voice helped distract me temporarily, but as soon we ended the call, my mind was already back to thinking abouthim.

Blue eyes.

Tousled hair.

Gravelly voice.

Ruggedly handsome.
