Everett flexes his jaw as his eyes go wide with fury. “You don’t know the room number? Elliot didn’t text it to you?”

“No,” I shake my head.

“Has he called you since last night? Does he even know you're here?”

“No,” I repeat, my tone so low it’s barely a whisper. “He hasn’t reached out since I hung up on him last night. And after the conversation we had… I’m not calling him either.”

“What a fucking piece of shit,” Everett hisses under his breath. He pulls his bottom lip between his teeth, running a frustrated hand through his hair.

“You already know how I feel about the way he treats you, Skylar,” he huffs. “So there’s no point in beating a dead horse. Go get the key, and I’ll be waiting by the elevators.”

He turns his back to me, dragging my suitcase with him. There’s so much he wants to say, I can see it in his body language. But he’s right, he would just be talking to a wall at this point because I don’t want to hear it. Because I know everything he has to say is true.

Ten minutes later, I finally have a key to the room as we head up to the tenth floor. Everett hasn't said a word to me since we stepped into the elevator. I can practically see the rageful steam billowing from his ears, but I know it’s not directed at me. Part of me hopes that Elliot isn't in the room, because Everett looks like he’s ready to rip his brother’s head off.

The elevator dings as Everett and I walk out into the hall. I don’t know if it’s anxiety or my intuition, but I feel a sense of unease with each step we take toward the room. The walls seem to close in, suffocating me as my shoes thump against the marble floor. All I can hear is the beating of my heart and Everett’s heavy footsteps following in rhythm with mine. When I’m finally standing in front of the door, I look down at the room card resting in my hand. Once I’m sure I’m at the right room, I ball my hand into a fist and knock.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Three knocks. No answer.

I take a deep breath and knock again.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Three hard knocks. No answer.

“Why the hell are you knocking?” Everett grunts. “You have a room key,” he adds, bracing an arm on the door frame as he stares down at me.

“I don’t know,” I stall, my words spilling out.I just feel like something’s wrong,I think to myself. “What if he’s not decent? What if he just got out of the shower?”

Everett scoffs. “He’s my brother, Skylar. I grew up with him. Do you really think I haven’t seen his small package before?”

I roll my eyes, shaking my head as Everett’s lips turn up in a wicked smile. Elliot may be a dick, but he definitely doesn't have a small one. However, it’s not as nice as Everett—

No.I shake my head, immediately putting a stop to that train of thought. What the hell is wrong with me?

“Open the door, Skylar,” Everett sighs, nodding his head towards the card reader. “He’s probably not even in the room.”

I straighten my back, sucking in a deep breath as I lift the key card to the door. A small green light appears at the same time I hear a click. I reach for the door handle, slowly turning it as I open the door and push into the room.

The first thing I see is a massive king-sized bed right in the center of the room. A large window reveals that the sun has set, allowing the city lights to illuminate the space. A dull bedside lamp highlights the two sweaty bodies entangled on the mattress. Two naked bodies writhing against each other as loud moans and grunts fall from their lips.

I don’t know what to do except stare. I don’t know how to feel except shocked as I stand there, watching my fiancé savagely fuck another woman.

“Fuckkkkkk,” Elliot groans, tossing his head back as he thrusts inside the woman. My eyes dart between their glistening bodies in disbelief.I’m in complete denial.I can’t believe what I’m seeing right now. This can’t be real. How have they not noticed us standing here?

I’m too embarrassed to move. If I step forward, I have to face my cheating fiancé. If I step back, I have to face his brother. I’ll have to acknowledge the truth of what Everett’s been trying to tell me since I met him. I feel like I’ve known it for so long, but this confirms it. I get the feeling that this isn’t the first time… That he’s likely had multiple “business meetings”that involve another woman. A woman who’s not his fiancé.

“Yes, Elliot, right there. So good,” the woman cries, clawing at Elliot’s back.

“Come for me, baby. I want to hear you scream my name,” Elliot groans through gritted teeth.

A tear slips down my cheek at what I’m witnessing. I always knew karma would come for me, and I guess this is it. I know deep down, I’m no better than Elliot. You deserve this,I tell myself.

“I’m not watching this shit anymore, and neither are you,” a deep voice growls behind me.

Before I have a chance to register what’s happening, Everett steps in front of me and charges toward the dresser sitting in front of the bed. A beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers rests on top of the polished wood. My eyes widen as I watch Everett grab the vase before hurling it across the room. Glass shatters as the elegant vase collides with the wall above the headboard of the bed. Scattered flowers and water droplets fall to the mattress, sending Elliot and his mistress scrambling off the bed in a naked jumble.
