“Enough” Everett shouts, his chest heaving up and down with furious breaths. His eyes narrow as his deadly gaze fixes on Elliot. “What thefuckis wrong with you, Elliot?”

Elliot’s panicked gaze flickers to me as he takes in my frozen body, eyes following the tear rolling down my cheeks. He shakes his head, opening and closing his mouth like he’s trying to speak but can’t find the words. There are no words. There is no explanation that can make this okay. This is the end, and he knows it.

“Skylar,” he rushes out, walking towards me. “Please, baby, let me explain. It’s not what it looks like—” He’s cut off by Everett’s large body stepping in front of him, halting his steps.

“If you take one more step towards her, I will fucking kill you,” he threatens. “And that’s a promise. You don’t deserve to even breathe the same air as her. Now, I suggest that you and your limp dick back the fuck up.” Everett’s fists are balled at his sides, like he’s using all his self-control to not pummel Elliot to the ground.

“I should've known you’d escort her up here,” Elliot sneers. “Everett Thompson, everyone’s knight in shining armor. Always coming to the rescue. You’re loving every second of this, aren't you?”

“No, I’m notenjoyingthis, you asshole,” Everett spits, shoving at Elliot’s chest. “I don’t enjoy ruining other people’s lives like you do.”

Elliot's eyes narrow to little slits at his jab. “Oh, so you’re going to bringthatup here?” Everett’s comment must hold a deeper meaning because a silent understanding flashes between their eyes. Everett’s nostrils flare, as if he’s been stabbed… as if he’s remembering something from the past.

“You don’t know shit about me or my fiancé, so I suggest thatyouback the fuck up,” Elliot continues, jabbing a finger into Everett’s chest.

“I know with one hundred percent certainty that you don’t deserve her,” Everett spits. “You never have. And you sure as hell don’t deserve to call her your fiancé. You finally just showed your ass, and you know what that means. I can see it in your eyes. It’s over, brother. You just gave up the best thing you ever had.”

“Fuck you,” Elliot grits out, less than an inch away from Everett’s face.

We’re briefly distracted by a rustling on the floor. The naked woman scoops the fallen bedsheet from the ground before wrapping it around her body in a panic. Too alarmed to find her clothes, her eyes flicker to Elliot before she clenches the sheet around her body and darts for the door. Within seconds, she’s gone… leaving only me, Everett, and Elliot.

Elliot’s eyes flinch when his gaze lands on the empty doorway.

“Awe… Don’t be sad, brother,” Everett croons. “I’m sure you’ll have another woman in your bed by tomorrow.”

Elliot’s nostrils flare as he steps to the side, staring at me over Everett’s shoulder.

“Sky… She was a business deal,” he rushes out. “That’s all it was. I promise you. You have to believe me.”

Finally, I gather the courage to speak for myself.

“A business deal?” I scoff, blinking away my tears. “I didn’t know that fucking other woman was in your job description, Elliot.”

“It was just this once, Skylar.” His voice breaks with every word.

Save your tears, you lying son of a bitch.

“I don’t believe a word that comes out of your mouth. You disgust me,” I rasp, shaking my head.

His brows pinch together as his eyes fill with unshed tears. “Skylar, please. We just need to talk. Tell Everett to leave so we can talk,” he begs.

“No,” I exhale. “There’s nothing to talk about. This is over. I think we both know that it’s been over for a long time.”

I look down at my left hand, letting one last tear fall before I slip the diamond ring from my finger. It sparkles under the city lights gleaming through the window, but not everything that glitters is gold. I toss the ring, watching it skip across the floor until it stops at Elliot’s feet. His eyes track the ring as he bends down to pinch it between his fingers.

He lets the ring slide into his palm before fisting his hand around it. “Please don’t do this, Sky,” he whispers.

“It’s already done,” I shake my head. “I have nothing else to say to you.”

“I can’t lose you.” He’s sobbing now, but I don’t feel an ounce of sadness for him. I can only think about how pathetic he looks, standing there naked while he holds the meaningless ring.

Elliot starts to lose control of his emotions as he panics, trying to take another step around his brother. Everett places a firm hand on his chest before shoving him back forcefully.

“She said she has nothing else to say to you,” Everett clips, flexing his jaw. “We’re going to walk out of this room, and you’re not going to say another word. You’ve already embarrassed yourself enough.”

Everett turns on his heels, spinning towards me. “Come on, Sky. We’re getting out of here.” He strides towards me, his fiery gaze laser-focused on my broken expression. He grabs the handle of my suitcase, his eyes darkening as Elliot spews a string of hateful curses behind him.

“Ungratefulbitch,” Elliot mumbles under his breath. His sharp words cut me like a knife.
