“You have no idea what a relief it is to know that you’re okay,” she mutters, her voice cracking. “We started getting worried when Elliot couldn't reach you. I’m just… I’m so thankful you’re safe.”

I’m so thankful you’re safe.

A wave of anxiety passes through my body at that sentence. She knew I was with Everett. Something is terribly wrong. I can hear it in her voice.

“Why wouldn't I be?” I ask, my question coming out panicked. “What is going on?”

“Sweetie…” She trails off, her voice breaking as muffled cries fill the silence.

No. She’s not going to tell me what I think she is. My mind is just spiraling to the worst-case scenario. Everything is okay.

Everything is fine.

“Claire, what thehellis going on?” I ask again, my patience wearing thin.

I bring my hand to my lips, anxiously biting my nails as my heart threatens to beat out of my chest.

“Sky…” She croaks. “I’m so scared.”

I run a shaky hand through my hair, trying like hell to steady my breathing.

“Claire,” I repeat sternly. “Tell me what happened.”

She takes a deep breath before confirming my worst nightmare.

“It’s… It’s Everett,” she whimpers, barely able to utter her son’s name. “He’s been in an accident.”

Time stops as the words “Everett” and “accident” repeat like a nightmare in my mind.

No.This is just a sick joke.

My whole world caves in, fading to black. Suddenly, my heart forgets how to beat. My lungs forget how to breathe. I clutch the phone to my ear, bracing my other hand on the bench in fear that I might pass out. My stomach turns, twisting with the worst possible kind of adrenaline.

“What do you mean?” I finally whisper, in complete disbelief.

“He… he was T-boned… by another driver,” she croaks, broken sobs breaking up her words.

“The other driver was trying to slow down and break at a stop sign, but their tires slipped on black ice. They lost control and the vehicle crashed directly into the driver’s side of Everett’s truck.” She barely gets out the last sentence before her voice breaks with muffled cries.

“Oh my God,” I whisper, my hand covering my mouth as my vision blurs with tears.

I close my eyes, trying to steady my breath. I pray that when I open them, I’ll wake up from this nightmare. This can’t be real. There’s no way this is real. But when I peel my eyes back open, I’m still sitting on the same airport bench, my limbs shaking with anxiety. The only sounds I can register are the racing of my heart and Claire’s broken whimpers.

“Is… Is he okay?” I rasp, fearing I already know the answer.

He has to be okay. I just got him back.

A beat of silence passes, feeling like an eternity.

“I… I don’t know, sweetie,” she exhales. “He was unconscious when the paramedics arrived at the scene. Thankfully, he has a pulse and is breathing on his own. But that’s all I know right now. He’s being care flighted to UCHealth Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. We’re driving there now from Denver. We should be there in about forty-five minutes. I’ll let you know as soon as I have an update.”

Care flighted. He was taken by fucking helicopter to the hospital. A sob breaks from my throat as I clench my hand over my twisting stomach.

Tears stream down my face at the mention of Everett being care flighted. That’s how you know an accident was bad.

I need to get to him. I need to see him. I can’t think about anything but getting to him. I swallow down the bile in my throat, quickly putting together a plan in my head.

“I’m coming,” I whisper, the words flying out of my mouth without a second thought.
