I need to see her.I need her to see me, to know that I’m still here and I’m hers.

“Mom,” I breathe out, my fingers tightening in her hair.

“Yeah?” She whispers, lifting her head to stare at me through red-rimmed eyes. I don’t know how, but it’s almost as if she knows what I’m about to say.

“Skylar,” I rasp, telling her everything she needs to know.

Her eyes well with tears before she says, “She’s here.”

She’s here. She’s here. She’s here. Those two words repeat through my mind like the sweetest song.

“What… What do you mean she’s here?” I ask through wide eyes. It feels like my heart might actually jump out of my chest.

Her lips tilt up in a soft smile. “She flew back to Colorado as soon as she heard about the accident. She came straight to you.”

She knows. I don’t know how, but my mom knows about me and Skylar. I can see it in her eyes. But I’m too worked up to care becauseshe’s here.

“I need to see her,” I rasp.

Right as the words leave my lips, an older man wearing a white coat enters the room. He smiles at me, but all I can think about is Skylar.

“Hi there, Everett,” he says in a friendly voice. “I’m Doctor Harris.” He walks towards me, stopping beside the bed to extend his hand out to me.

“Hi,” I breathe, slowly shaking his hand.

“I’m glad to see that you’re awake. How are you feeling?”

“Sore…” I croak. “Exhausted and sore. Like I just ran a marathon.”

“Both of which are expected after the accident you were just in,” he nods. “If you don’t mind, I need to steal a little bit of your time. I just want to ask you some questions and make sure you’re doing okay. Due to the severity of your accident, it’s very normal to be in pain, but I want to make sure we get you as comfortable as possible. Afterward, you can have all the time you need with your family. Is that okay with you?”

“Yes,” I nod, returning his smile.

My mom steps back, giving the doctor room as he starts to assess me.

“Mom,” I rasp, stopping her in her tracks.

“Yeah, hon?”

“Skylar. I want Skylar,” I breathe. “Can you get her for me?”

“Of course,” she whispers before exiting the room.

After what feelslike an eternity of questions, poking, prodding, and going over treatment plans, I feel even more exhausted than I did before. Although, part of my fatigue is probably from the strong as hell pain medication the nurse just administered through my IV.Thank God for pain meds.I now see why people get so easily addicted.

Using a bunch of medical jargon, Doctor Harris explained to me that I have a severe concussion, a broken leg, and three broken ribs. That explains the pounding headache and invisible needles prodding at my side. Thankfully, he expects me to make a full recovery.

It could have been so much worse,I think to myself. I didn't realize how bad the accident was until my dad showed me a picture that a bystander took from the scene. The left side of my truck was completely crushed. I have no idea how I made it out alive. I’m just thankful to be here. I was also relieved to find out that the other driver is alive and well, save for a few cuts and scrapes.

Safe to say, I’ve learned my fucking lesson. Never attempt to drive through a winter weather warning again, especially when I’m from the state of Texas where we barely get an inch of snow each year. What the hell was I thinking?

I’m distracted from my thoughts when I hear two soft taps against the door only seconds after the nurse leaves the room.

My heart fucking stops. It just stops beating because I know who’s behind that door. Before I see Skylar, I can feel her. I can always feel when she’s near.

I swallow the lump in my throat, wiping my sweaty palms against the thin fabric of the stupid hospital gown they made me wear.
