She thinks for a moment. She puts her pen in her mouth. It’s distracting. “Well, I’m struggling a bit with not clipping any major veins or arteries during the fusion.” She points to a specific spot. “You see, when the tool enters here, I don’t see how it’s possible to slide it all the way in without bumping anything.”

“Ah. I see. Have you tried coming at it from a different angle?”

She pinches her eyebrows together. “What do you mean?”

I walk behind her and place my hand near hers. “May I?” She nods. I place my hand over hers. She’s so soft. I place my other hand on her hip and switch her positioning in front of the spine.

I close my eyes for a second. This is the first physical contact we’ve had in months. It feels so nice. Both of our breaths have noticeably deepened.

“If you stand over here, and move your fingers this way, you’ll be safe.” I manipulate her body and her fingers. I’m bent over, and my face is so close to her neck. I inhale her scent. She smells amazing. It’s like vanilla and strawberries. Everything about her being in my arms feels right. I close my eyes for one more second and take it in.

She whispers, “Dr. Cooper.”

My mouth is right next to her ear. I whisper back, “Harley.” I rub my nose up and down her neck. I just can’t help myself.

She swallows hard. “We can’t do this.” But she makes no attempt to move.

As if I have no control over my body, I slowly remove my hand from hers, rub it down her cheek and allow it to trickle down onto her neck. She lets out a soft moan as she leans back into me. I’m hard as a rock. She no doubt can feel it, as I’m now pressed against her backside. I have such a strong urge to bend her over this table.

I can feel her let out the breath she was undoubtedly holding, as she again whispers to me. “Dr. Cooper. We can’t do this. I can’t do this.” She still makes no attempt to move. “You know what would happen to my reputation if this came out.”

That’s the bucket of ice water that I needed. I immediately back away. I rub my hand over my face. “You’re right. I’m so sorry, Ms. Lawrence. It won’t happen again.” I walk toward the door. “I hope that position shift helps. Good night, Ms. Lawrence.”

“Good night. Thank you for the tip, Dr. Cooper.” I simply nod with my back to her as I exit the door. I need to get out of here, and away from her, immediately.

HARLEY

It’s the night before the contest. I’ve been working crazy hours this week in the lab to perfect the surgical technique. I see Dr. Cooper at the door. I enthusiastically wave him in and smile. “Look, I think I’ve got it right, and my speed gets better each time. Your tip was a game-changer for me. Thank you.” I’m so excited.

He walks over scanning my work. He bends down to get a closer look, ensuring my tools aren’t touching any veins or arteries. He’s in my face again. He’s so gorgeous. That freaking chin dimple. I stare at it all the time. He’s so close that I could touch it if I wanted to.

He lifts his head just a bit as he smiles up at me. “You’ve mastered it, Ms. Lawrence. I’m pretty sure that you’ve got this competition in the bag. I don’t think anyone else ever stood a chance against you. The prize is all but yours.”

I laugh. “What will a win, a Hershey Kiss?” Why did I say kiss? Why? Because I wish it could be a real one. I’m staring at his lips while licking mine. His face turns serious when he notices, and now he’s staring at me. The tension is palpable. I can’t help myself. I reach my hand out, and run my fingertips down his bottom lip into his chin dimple. The dimple that has a starring role in all of my dreams. Every night I replay when he was on his knees between my legs looking up at me. His dimple covered in my juices.

I’m so drawn to him. I feel myself physically aching for him. I’m throbbing between my legs. I move my hand over to cup his cheek. I don’t care anymore. I need to kiss him. I need to taste him again. I move my lips towards his. He’s not moving away. Our lips are almost touching when a noise outside the door breaks our collective daze.

We both jerk backward. “I…I…I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”

He holds up his hands. “No, no. It’s completely my fault. I’ll leave you to it, Ms. Lawrence. Good luck tomorrow.” He leaves the lab.

I blow out a breath. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. He almost kissed me the other night. I almost kissed him tonight. I think we’re both struggling with this arrangement. This is a recipe for disaster. I can’t see him every day. I think for the second semester I’m going to have to request a transfer into Dr. Waters’ class. I don’t want to, but I just don’t see any other way around it.

The dayof the contest arrives. Half of the students don’t have the proper technique. Of those with proper technique, most of them take way too much time. There are only a small handful that do it quickly. I know that I can do it faster. None of them are standing in the position that Dr. Cooper taught me.

It’s my turn. I get into my spot as I wait for him to start the clock. I get it done exactly correctly. I know that much. I look up at him. “What was my time?” I’m pretty sure I was the fastest, but I was in the zone and wasn’t totally aware of the time ticking by.

Dr. Cooper looks up from his timer with a huge smile. “Well Ms. Lawrence, your technique and quality of care were perfect, and your time was better than mine when I worked on Phillip. You too would have saved him from a terrible fate. Perhaps he’d be back on the football field if you were his surgeon. Congratulations. You’re the winner.” His smile widens even more. The whole class claps for me. It feels amazing. I love doing this. I can’t wait until I’m a real surgeon and save real people.

“Ms. Lawrence, we’ll think up an appropriate reward for you. Great job, class. If your technique was flawed today, I suggest you spend some more time in this lab in the next few weeks. You’ll have to do this perfectly as part of your final exam. If you haven’t done so already, please also make sure to get me your analysis paragraph on the paralyzed surfer. That’s due today. Class is dismissed.”

I stay in the lab after he dismisses us. “Dr. Cooper, can I have a word with you in your office?”

“Of course, Ms. Lawrence. Follow me.” I follow him up to his office and close the door. I sit in one of the chairs at the front of his desk. He looks at me. “If this is about the reward, I’m sure we can find something appropriate.”
