“You’re amazing, sis. I’m so proud of you. Have you read your letter from Dad yet?
“Not yet. I’ll head to Mom’s this weekend to grab it. My residency is keeping me busy all week. I can’t get out there before then.”
“Don’t work too hard. Have a little fun. Do you want to go out sometime soon to celebrate?”
“I’m absolutely committed to going out more in the coming months. I just need to get up and running in my residency. I need to get used to the schedule.”
“Fine, but we’re going out soon.”
She screams. “Oh my god, I almost forgot to tell you. Guess what? I’ve got big news. Huge.” She sounds so excited.
I have no clue what this could be. “What’s the big news?”
“Mom met a guy at a bar. He asked her out and she’s thinking about going out with him this weekend.”
I’m truly shocked. “Shut the hell up. Are you serious?”
“Yep.”
“That’s amazing. This could be so great for her. She needs something like this.”
“Agree. Frankly, Mom needs to get laid. Her dry spell is even longer than yours.” Just barely.
“Thanks for that.”
“Sorry, but you need to think about getting some action too.”
“I know. You’re right. Like I said, I promise to start going out more. I just need a little more time. This is great news about Mom though. You made my day. Do we know anything about him?”
“I couldn’t get any more details out of Mom. I’ll text Aunt Cass to see what I can find out.”
“Okay. Let me know. I’ll talk to you soon.”
Exactly twenty seconds later, my cell phone pings with a text notification. I take my phone back out. I see it’s my group chat with my sisters and Aunt Cass.
Reagan: AC- Mom told me she met a guy at a bar and may go out with him this weekend. What’s the deal?
Aunt Cass: YES!!! She slow danced with him at Cover Me. They drank and talked at the bar all night. She was even flirting. He’s hot AF.
Skylar: WHAT??!! That’s so awesome. She go home with him? Please say yes.
Aunt Cass: No. He asked her out for this coming weekend. She initially said no because she was nervous, but he charmed her into agreeing to talk on the phone every night this week before she makes a decision about the date. She’s going to go if I have to drag her ass out.
Me: That’s fantastic. Do we know anything about him other than he’s “hot AF”?
Aunt Cass: I did some research. I wouldn’t let my BFF go out with a freaking serial killer. He’s a very respected and successful businessman. Did I mention that he’s hot AF?
Reagan: This is awesome!! Good work Aunt Cass!! Got to get back to the shop. See you bitches at dinner on Sunday night.
I put my phone back in my purse and walk into the hospital. I have a huge smile on my face for Mom. I would be thrilled if she started dating.
I’m about thirty minutes early, but they get me started on my paperwork and my IDs. There’s a pretty, young-looking woman, with long brown hair, sitting next to me filling out paperwork as well. She looks really nervous. Once we both finish, I’m handed a white coat, but she’s not. I decide to introduce myself. “Hi, I’m Harley Lawrence. Is this your first day too?
“Yes, my first day as a surgical nurse. I’m really nervous. Does it show?”
“Everyone’s nervous on their first day. What’s your name?”
“Oh. Duh. I’m Jessica Shaw. It’s nice to meet you.” We shake hands. “Thanks for introducing yourself. It’ll be nice to have a friendly face among the doctor staff.” She nods her head towards my white coat.
