“It would be disrespectful to your mother for me to tell you the details. She’ll have to be the one to tell you.” He looks down again. “Where are we going?”

“You’re going to fix this. I won’t watch her suffer through another broken heart.” I see the corner of his mouth rise. He’s happy that I’m taking him to see her. I grab his hand. “Jackson, don’t screw this up. Make it right.”

He nods. “I’ll try. She’s a stubborn woman.” Don’t I know it.

We arrive at her house. I walk in the front door and yell for her. I go into her bedroom. Of course, she’s still curled up in bed. It’s clear that she’s been crying.

I’m not sure either of them has showered in days. I lock them in her room and tell them to fix it and shower.

I’m pulling into my parking spot in the hospital garage when I hear my text tone for Reagan.

Reagan: You’re coming out tonight.

Me: Can’t. I don’t get off until 7:30.

Reagan: We’re not 80. We don’t go out for the early bird specials.

Me: You’re such a pain.

Reagan: You promised. You’ve been working for 3 months. It’s time. Trevor and Hayden may come too. We’re going to make a plan to get Mom and Jackson back together.

Me: Taken care of. I just locked him in her room and told them that they can’t come out until they kiss and make up.

Reagan: You’re a genius, sis!

Me: Duh. Of course I am. ;)

Reagan: I’ll be at your place at 8:30 to help you get ready. Wash your hair before I come, and I’ll blow it dry for you. I’ll do your make-up too.

Me: I don’t know that I agreed to go out.

Reagan: Funny, I remember it differently. See you at 8:30. Love you.

Me: Love you too, brat.

It’s a normal morning in the ER. A few broken bones, several head injuries, a ton of people with colds who think it’s an emergency when it’s not, and one mild heart attack.

At some point I see Trevor walk in with a woman holding her eye. She’s extremely attractive, but she seems older than him. Maybe in her early or mid-thirties. I walk over to him. “Trevor?”

He looks up. He seems a little embarrassed to see me. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him as anything other than confident and playful. “Hey, Harley. I wasn’t sure if you were going to be here today.” He looks down. “Frankly, I was hoping that you weren’t.”

What? Why?

“I don’t have to be the doctor that sees you. Just know that if I bring you back now as my patient, I can save you about five hours of time. If you sit in the regular waiting area, you’re looking at a long day.”

He motions to the woman, and she nods, clearly in pain. He looks back at me. “Okay. Thank you. This is Debbie by the way.”

“Hey, Debbie. I’m Dr. Lawrence. I’ll be helping you today. Why don’t you head through those doors to room six. I’ll be right with you in a few minutes. I just need to grab a nurse so we can take care of the paperwork.”

She smiles. “Thanks Dr. Lawrence.”

Debbie starts to walk through the doors. Trevor hangs back for a moment and whispers to me. “Hey, I don’t know her last name, so don’t ask me that in front of her.”

I roll my eyes. “The nurse will be in to get her license and insurance information. Pay attention then.”

He smiles. “Good idea.”

I grab Jess and we walk into room six. “Debbie, this is nurse Jessica. Jess, this is Trevor. Trevor is the son of my mother’s boyfriend.”
