She laughs. “It’s my gift in life. I sense when people are getting laid. At least when it’s good sex. And you, my girl, have been getting it very good for the past three months.”

I can’t help but smile. “I certainly have.” I look around as I think of what to say. I don’t want to lie to her. I owe her the truth. My face turns serious. “It’s him.”

“Him who?” I look at her for a moment and wait for it to register. I see the moment it does. “Oh. I thought he was gone for good.”

“He was. He came back for me.”

“I see.” I can’t read her face right now.

“Aunt Cass, I love him.”

She brings her lips into a tight line. “I thought you might. Does he love you?”

“Yes. Are you upset with me?”

“Are you happy?”

“Yes.”

“Then, no. I’m not upset with you. I’ve never seen you happier than you’ve been the past three months. How could I be upset with that?”

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“What about me not becoming a two-dollar whore?”

“The circumstances were different then, Harley. He was your professor. That was a long time ago though.”

“He’s one of my supervisors at the hospital now.”

She blows out a breath and closes her eyes. “That’s not ideal. I suppose employer/employee isn’t quite as problematic as teacher/student, but it’s not great. You know that.”

“He’s not really my employer. More of a supervisor. A mentor.” She nods. “No one knows yet.”

“Ride that out a little longer if you can. Make sure it’s really worth the shit storm it’s going to cause.”

“I’m trying. He wants us to tell everyone.”

“You have more to lose in the reputation department than he does. It’s your call.”

“I know. He’s respecting my wishes.” I pause for a moment. “He asked me to marry him.”

She looks surprised. “Wow, Harley. Things havereallyprogressed. Is that what you want?”

“Yes, but not now. Not while we’re still a dirty secret. In the future. He’s definitely my future though. I’m sure of that, but I told him no for now.”

“You need to talk to your mother. She knows nothing and she doesn’t deserve that.”

“I know. I will. I didn’t want to take anything away from her wedding. She’s been on cloud nine the past few months. I do wish he was here with me, but this wasn’t the week for it. Another time.”

“You’re delaying the inevitable, Harley. It needs to be soon.”

I nod. “Yes, soon.”

It’s been a fun week.We drank our way through Mexico. I don’t think I’ve ever had this much to drink over the course of a week in my entire life.
