“Like Hayden, I’m a gentleman and would never kiss and tell.”

Hayden throws him an elbow. “You’re no gentleman. Does the girl whose eye you came in think you’re a gentleman?”

“I took her to the hospital, didn’t I?

We all laugh.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

THE PRESENT

HARLEY

I’ve returned from Mexico convinced more than ever that Brody is the one for me, and we need to come up with a plan to let everyone know. I suppose that starts with my family, especially Mom.

I feel terrible keeping this secret from her. While I never wanted to burden her when she was in a bad place herself, she’s in a great place now and I need to confide in her. She’s going to be hurt that she’s just learning of us now, but I need to peel off the band-aid. The longer this drags on, the worse it is.

She’s gone for another week in Mexico, and then we have Skylar’s college graduation just after that. Maybe once the celebration dies down, it’ll be the right time.

I pass Dr. McCrevis in the hallway. He stops to talk to me. “Dr. Lawrence, we have a group of first year medical school students coming through today. Considering the fact that they attend to your alma mater, I volunteered you to talk to them for a bit. Maybe you can show them around. Do you mind?”

“Of course not. I’d be happy to. My brother is in that class. I was hoping I’d get to show him around.”

“Wonderful. They’ll be up here in about twenty minutes or so. Thank you for doing this.”

I smile at him. “My pleasure.”

About a half an hour later, the group makes their way up to the surgical floor. I immediately find Hayden and hug him. “Hey baby bro. How’s it going?”

He looks embarrassed. “Hey Harley. I thought I might see you.”

“Yes, they asked me to show you guys around.” I gather the group. “Hi everyone. I’m Dr. Lawrence. I went to the same school as you. I graduated last year. I’m a first-year surgical resident here now, and the very fortunate older sister of this handsome devil here.” Hayden puts his head down in embarrassment.

“I’m going to give you guys a tour of the surgical floor. Feel free to ask any questions. Follow me.” I motion for them to follow.

We start walking down the hallway. I hear a few students ask Hayden about being related to me. He’s all of a sudden become a very popular student. It makes me smile.

We get to the administrative area, and I introduce the group to everyone. I make sure to introduce Hayden to Jess, since I know she was anxious to meet him. As soon as I do, Jess looks at me with terror in her eyes. “I know Hayden. I didn’t realize that he’s your brother. He’s the one you previously mentioned?” I nod.

She turns back to him. “Good to see you, Hayden.”

Hayden turns fifty shades of red. “Good to see you too, Jessica.” As we turn to leave, I catch them briefly touching hands out of the corner of my eye.

I show the group several operating rooms and tell them about some of the special surgeries we perform up here. At some point, when the opportunity arises, I link my arm with Hayden’s. “Anything you want to tell me about you and Jess?”

“Umm…nope.”

I’m smirking now. “Have you by chance spent any time with Jess in a hospital supply closet?”

He turns red again as he looks at me. “Harley, I told you that a gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell.”

“But you could have said no. I think I have my answer.” He rolls his eyes and I giggle. “If it matters, I think you two are so cute together. I love her. She’s fantastic. And obviously I love my baby brother. It’s a perfect match.”

“Please don’t tell Trevor. I may introduce her to the family in a few weeks, but for now, I don’t need him in my business.”

“Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me.”

He nods in appreciation. “She said that you previously mentioned me. What did you say?”
