“I said yes, of course.”

“Wow. Is this it for you?”

“This is it for me, Reagan. He’s the one.” I sigh in content. “We’re finally not a dirty secret. There’s absolutely nothing standing in our way now.”

“I’m so happy for you.” She leans over and hugs me. “I love you.”

I hug her back. “I love you too.”

She stands up. “I’ve got to get to work. Let’s try to go out over the weekend and celebrate.”

“That sounds good.”

“Content, agreeable Harley is freaky.”

I laugh. “Brody just said the same thing. I’ll see you later.”

When she leaves, I go to my bathroom. I pull out the brown bag I’ve been avoiding for a few weeks and take care of business.

A few hours later,I pull into my spot in the hospital garage. My shift begins in about thirty minutes. I smile as I get out of my car. For the first time ever, Brody and I have nothing standing in the way of our happily ever after. It’s almost hard to believe. I can’t wait to talk to him, and truly begin our life together. Just then, I smell something strange, and my world goes black.

BRODY

“Jess, is Dr. Lawrence here yet?”

“No, and it’s kind of odd. Her shift starts right now. Not only is she never late, but she’s always at least thirty minutes early.”

I call her cell, but it rings and then goes to her voicemail.

I text Reagan to see if she’s still with her, but she replies that she left Harley at her apartment hours ago.

“Jess, can you please pull up Dr. Lawrence’s contact form.”

“Sure thing, Dr. Cooper.”

She presses a few buttons on the keyboard. The information pops up on the screen. I scan it until I see what I’m looking for. I dial the number on my phone. I hear a female voice. “Hello.”

“Hey Darian, it’s Brody Cooper.”

“Oh. Hello, Brody. What can I help you with?”

“Have you spoken with Harley this morning?”

“No, I haven’t. Why do you ask?”

“I don’t want to worry you, but she’s late for work, and it’s kind of unlike her. She’s not answering her cell.”

“Brody, youareworrying me.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing. She probably hit some traffic. I’m heading to the garage to check if her car is here. I’ll call you back and let you know what I find.”

“No, I’ll stay on the line with you.” Her voice is getting shaky.

“Okay. Just give me a minute to get there.” I hear her yell for Jackson. She fills him in on things.
