We all,and I meanallof us, stay over at Mom and Jackson’s. We eat junk food, watch movies, and laugh. It’s like soup for the soul, and I really needed it.

Brody is treated like a member of the family. Both the good and the bad. Though surprisingly, he gives as good as he gets. He doesn’t let Trevor or Reagan get away with anything.

At some point he whispers to me, “Is something going on with Trevor and Cassandra?”

“I don’t know. I’ve often wondered the same thing but have ultimately concluded that I don’t want to know. They’re both flirtatious people by nature, but I agree, there’s something odd about their interactions.”

I scrunch my nose. “She’s more than twice his age, though I know he likes older women. He’s told us that before.”

“It’s strange. Whatever. Not my business.” He squeezes me tight. “You, however, are my business.” His arms wrap around me, as he interlaces his fingers with mine and kisses my cheek.

He hasn’t stopped holding me the entire night. I think the events of today scared him as much as they scared me.

Mom, Reagan, and Skylar also don’t seem to stray too far from me. Jackson is working overtime to soothe Mom. I think she’s emotional over today. I’m so grateful that she has him to keep her calm.

Mom is being incredibly warm to Brody. I think her past issues with him are now long forgotten. At some point she even throws her arm around him and smiles at him. “Brody, I hear that you’re a fairly decent quarterback. You know, I’m a very good quarterback myself.”

He smiles back at her. “I was an all-state quarterback, actually. I’m happy to toss the ball around with you anytime.”

Skylar interrupts. “Don’t get her started, Brody. And don’t challenge her. She’s a crazy woman on the field. She’ll tackle you without a second thought.”

Brody laughs, but Mom just gives him a guilty grin. “Brody and I will settle this at Thanksgiving this year, won’t we Brody?” She winks at him.

That’s months away. I guess it’s a good sign that she’s talking to him about Thanksgiving.

We all say good night. Brody and I head to our appointed room.

We get into bed, and he pulls me in close. He gently kisses me. He can’t do much more with his mouth because of his split lip.

I trace his two stitches with my fingers. “That’s probably going to scar. You should have a plastic surgeon look at it in the morning.”

“Aren’t women supposed to find scars sexy?”

I smile at him. “Everything about you is sexy, Dr. Cooper.”

He nuzzles into my neck. “I’m taking you home tomorrow. We’re getting into bed and not surfacing for a few days.”

Sounds perfect.

THE PRESENT

BRODY

“Harley, let’s go dancing tonight.”

“Really? You and me at clubs tends to be an explosive combination.” She smirks suggestively at me.

I wrap my arms around her. “That’s what I’m hoping for.”

She looks up at me. “I’m in.”

“Club Liberty?”

She smiles. “Perfect. Back to the scene of the crime.” She kisses me. I wince in pain. My lip is still a bit tender and swollen.

It’s been a little over a week since the Waters debacle. The hospital encouraged us to take some time off to rest and recuperate. We took them up on it.
