Mom laughs. “We were at Reagan’s packing. Jackson and the boys will be here in a little bit.”
Aunt Cass and Reagan both scan my body. They look at each other and nod in some sort of silent agreement. Reagan asks, “Did you just have sex?”
How do they always know? I turn to Mom and Skylar. “I’m telling you guys, both of them are witches.”
Aunt Cass turns to Reagan. “That sounds like a yes to me.”
Reagan nods. “Sure does.”
Eleven hours later, our baby boy is born. He’s perfect and healthy in every way. Brody goes to tell my family, but I tell him not to reveal the name. I want to do that.
My whole Brady Bunch family, along with Aunt Cass, come into the room. Brody’s Dad and his wife are flying in over the weekend.
Mom has tears in her eyes as she sees my baby boy for the first time. I hand him to her. “Mom, meet Scott Lawrence Cooper.” She begins to sob, as do my sisters. Even Aunt Cass and Jackson have tears gathering in their eyes.
Mom squeezes me. “Oh Harley, he’s so beautiful. He’s perfection.”
Trevor takes a peek. “If anyone cares, I think he looks like me.” Hayden smacks his head.
Trevor picks up the blanket to look between Scott’s legs. “Definitelylooks like me.” He winks at Aunt Cass.
Brody grabs the baby into his arms. “Sorry Trevor, those generous family jewels are all me.” Trevor smiles.
I roll my eyes. “Can we please stop talking about my son’s penis? He’s twenty minutes old.”
Everyone laughs. The room eventually thins out, and it’s just me and Mom. Brody is taking a quick shower in the hospital.
Mom pulls out an envelope and hands it to me. I read the front.To Harley on The Day You Become a Mom. I supposed on some level I knew this was coming. I just hadn’t thought about it today. I look up at her. “Mom, will you read it to me?” She nods as she opens the envelope. We both already have tears dripping down our cheeks. She begins:
Harley,
Baby doll, it’s crazy that this day is here. You’re a mom. I can’t believe my first baby girl is actually a mom. I still see you as a little girl in my arms. There’s not a doubt in my mind that you will be an incredible mother. Look at the example you had. If you can be half the mom that yours is, you’ll have one very lucky and very happy baby.
I hope that this means that you have everything you want in life and that you’re enjoying yourself. Living life to the fullest. I hope it means that you’ve stopped to smell the roses. Maybe even the ocean too. I hope you’ve met someone special that makes you as happy as your mom made me. Someone truly deserving of the sensational woman that you are. Make sure he treats you like a princess. You deserve nothing less.
Guess what? You have it all now. You have a wonderful career and a family. As a father, I couldn’t possibly ask for more. I’m so proud of you, baby doll. Do what you need to do to stay happy. Don’t ever forget that your happiness means everything.
If it’s a boy, I’d like to suggest that Scott is an excellent name. It served me well. Give my grandchild a big kiss from me. I promise that I’ll watch out for him or her from above.
