I nod. He kisses my cheek goodbye and leaves.

What the hell have I gotten myself into?

CHAPTERSIX

CARTER

Afew days later, I head down to Dad’s office. I smile at the new assistant. “Hi, I’m Carter Daulton. Nice to meet you.”

She smiles back. She’s young and attractive which means she won’t last the week. “Hello, Mr. Daulton, it’s nice to meet you as well. I’m Carrie.”

“Welcome, Carrie. Is my father in?”

“He is. He’s not on the phone, so you can go right in.”

“Thank you.” I start to walk toward his office, but then look back. “Carrie, when you go in his office, make sure to leave the door open.”

She slowly nods with a confused look on her face.

Though open, I knock on his office door. “Dad, do you have a minute?”

“Sure, Carter. Come in.” He waves me in. “What is it? I’m busy.”

“I actually met someone. I spoke with Mom, and I’m bringing her to dinner tonight so you can meet her.”

“Great, I’ll see you then.”

I start to tell him who it is, hoping to have a conversation with him about it, but his phone rings and he waves me away.

Good chat, Dad. As always.

I text Reagan that I’ll pick her up at her store at 7:00. I arrive at 6:55, and she walks out immediately. She’s in a red dress that fits her hourglass figure to perfection. It’s just above the knee, showing off her long, toned legs. It’s got a belt which only further accentuates her curves. It’s tight in the chest as I imagine most things are for her. Her blonde hair is down in waves. She’s breathtakingly gorgeous.

I get out and open the door for her. She nods her head at me in appreciation. “Who says chivalry is dead? Even fake boyfriends open doors.” She smiles at me, and I return her smile.

“I was a few minutes early. I can’t believe you were ready. I’ve never dated a woman who wasn’t always running late.”

“Lateness is disrespecting someone else’s time, Carter. It’s basically saying that my time is more important than yours. You’ll never catch me being late for anything.”

“That’s an interesting perspective. Did you learn that in Marketing 101?”

“No, Scott Lawrence 101. Best class I ever took.” She smiles as she gets into the car.

I go around, slide in the driver’s side, and turn to her. “You look perfect. Thanks for understanding our overly formal family dress code.” I didn’t mention it to her, but she must have picked up on it when I talked about it at her family dinner the other night. Her family was completely casual. It was nice. My family would never do that. I’m in a jacket and tie as I always am when I have dinner at their house.

She nods. “Every family is different, Carter. One isn’t necessarily better than the other. Everyone does their own thing.”

I turn to her. “I don’t think you get it. Your family iswaybetter than mine. You’re all genuinely good people who genuinely love each other. When I tell you my father is a bad man, I’m not just saying that he’s a jerk. He’s areallybad man. He’s extremely disrespectful to women, so prepare yourself for that. I have no doubt he’ll disrespect you at some point this evening.”

She takes a deep breath. “He sounds lovely.”

“When I tell you that I don’t want you alone with him ever, I mean it. I suspect it’s fairly common for him to force himself on women.”

“Like sexually assaults them?”

“I believe so, yes. I don’t know for sure, but it’s bad.”

“Why isn’t he in prison?”
