“It was really bad for a really long time. That’s why I transferred back to Philly. My sisters and Aunt Cass needed more help with her. She didn’t get out of bed for nearly two years, and barely left her house for another year after that. Aunt Cass was an amazing friend. She did everything for my mom, and my sisters and I filled in the gaps. A little after the three-year mark, Aunt Cass started getting her to go out. One night out, she met Jackson, and he basically healed her overnight. She came back to life. Back to us. My sisters and I are eternally grateful to Jackson for what he did for her.”

“Jackson seems like a good guy.”

“He’s the best. My mother knows how to pick them.”

We’re silent for a bit before he asks, “Do you have any tattoos?”

I smile. “Yes, but don’t tell my mother. She’ll flip out.”

He laughs. “Where is it?”

“Somewhere you’ll never see.”

He laughs again. “Does seeing my tattoos make you hot for me?”

I shake my head. “We made a choice that this is a business arrangement, Carter. We need to stick with that.”

We walk in silence for a bit longer. I probably shouldn’t ask this, but I can’t seem to help myself. “Out of curiosity, what’s your type? What kind of women do you prefer?”

“I like smart, driven women. I agree with you about wanting a partner with backbone. It doesn’t take a Freudian examination of my family life to figure out why. But generally, I think I want what most men in my position want. I want a woman who’s clean and classy on my arm, and dirty and trashy in my bed.”

I smile as I nod in understanding. Yep, that’s what most men want, whether they admit it or not. At least he has the balls to admit it.

We return to the house, and everyone gradually arrives. It’s assumed that Carter and I will share a room, so we do.

After the kids go to sleep, we all get into our bathing suits to make our way to the rooftop hot tub. Carter comes out of the bathroom in his bathing suit. Holy shit. His body is ridiculous. I saw a hint of it at the beach today when he showed me his tattoos, but he’s completely ripped. His arms are cut with big biceps and triceps. His shoulders are even more broad than they appear in clothes. He has the same light brown hair that’s on his head on his chest. He has a muscular stomach with a vee leading into his bathing suit.

He notices me staring and smiles. “Like what you see?”

I shrug. “I’ve seen better.”

He smirks. “No, you haven’t. In fairness, neither have I. You have a beautiful body, Reagan.”

“Thank you.”

“I don’t see your tattoo, though. It must be pretty well hidden.”

“I told you it needed to be somewhere my mother would never see.”

“I’ll find it.”

“No, Carter. You won’t.” He grins. “Oh, and fair warning, if you think Mom and Jackson are over the top when clothed, wait until you see him when she’s in a bathing suit. His hands and mouth will not leave her body the entire night. I guarantee it.”

He shakes his head in wonder. “I know it seems gross to you, but I hope you realize how lucky you are. I would give anything to have grown up in an affectionate household.”

I mumble, “You won’t feel lucky when you’re hearing them go at it all night.”

He laughs as we head up to the roof. He grabs my hand as we walk out.

I look at a hot tub that seems to have tripled in size. “Brody, did you get a new hot tub?”

Brody nods. “Yes, the old one was too small for this growing family. I had it replaced so everyone could more easily fit.” Damn, he is such a nice guy.

Mom and Jackson are already in. She’s on his lap, leaning her head back on his shoulder, with her eyes closed. His hands and lips are all over her. I turn to Carter and give him anI told you solook. He smiles.

We all get in. Most of the couples are touchy feely, but Carter and I sit next to each other, keeping our hands to ourselves.

Aunt Cass breaks the comfortable silence. “So, Carter, tell us about yourself.”
