We walk into the house and hear Trevor yelling on the phone. “What do you mean you bought condoms at a dollar store? Who the hell buys condoms at a dollar store? It’s literally the one thing you can’t cheap out on.”

“You’re a fucking idiot. Did you get the pregnancy test at a dollar store too?”

Carter and I look at each other and silently laugh.

“You’re honestly a moron. Call me when you know for sure.”

Trevor eventually hangs up. We’re all staring at him. “Anthony may or may not have gotten a one-night stand pregnant. Apparently, he buys condoms at the dollar store. Why would anyone do that?” He turns to Carter. “Carter, have you ever bought condoms at a dollar store?”

Carter winks at Trevor. “No. They don’t sell magnums.”

My eyes widen as everyone now stares at me. I motion toward Trevor. “You should know all about that, Secretariat.”

Aunt Cass yells from the kitchen. “We don’t use condoms. The magnums are too small for Trevor anyway.”

I see Harley and Brody smirk at each other, while Jackson mutters into his cereal, “They’re all too small. That’s why I had a vasectomy.”

Oh my. There’s a whole lot of BDE in this room.

CHAPTERSEVEN

REAGAN

Carter asked me to dinner tonight. Now that we’ve met each other’s families, and gotten to know each other better, it’s time to start being seen in public together.

He told me to dress casually and specifically to wear jeans. I don’t realize why until he pulls in to pick me up. He’s riding a badass motorcycle, and I can admit that he looks hot as fuck doing so. He stops right in front of me and gives me a smile that I’ll likely be remembering when I slip into bed alone tonight.

He hands me a helmet. “Need a ride, ma’am?”

I do. In more ways than one. I smile back. “Kawasaki Ninja H2 R?”

He closes his eyes for a moment. “I’m trying to show restraint around you, Reagan. That may literally be the hottest thing any woman has ever said to me in my entire life.”

I laugh. “I know bikes, Carter. Despite my mom’s protests, my dad had one, and so did a few of my exes. You didn’t tell me that you have one of these.”

“I want you to see me as a bad boy. I couldn’t just tell you. You needed the full visual.” He winks. “I may wear a business suit all day, but I’m a different man at night.”

I swallow. That is not what I need to hear right now, but I nonetheless happily climb on the back as we take off toward the restaurant. It’s still a bit cold at night, but it’s worth a little chill, and I’m holding onto a big, warm body. I love seeing Philadelphia this way. It’s such a beautiful city. I love living here.

He parks the bike, grabs my hand, and we go inside the restaurant. The hostess fawns all over him, causing me to roll my eyes. She doesn’t know I’m his fake girlfriend. She could show a little restraint.

We get a corner booth and order drinks. I ask him, “How long have you ridden?”

He thinks for a moment and then gives me a boyish grin. “Since about the time I could walk. Despite my grandfather being a well-respected executive, he had a bike shop at his house and loved to work on them. That was how he relaxed. He wasn’t a golfer. He was a mechanic. He brought me into his shop early and taught me everything. I think his love for it was passed along to me. I maintain a small garage of bikes and work on a few of them when I can. Not as often as I’d like.”

“Wow, I would never have guessed that. That’s awesome. I want to see your shop one day.”

“Really?”

I nod. “Of course. Did your father work on the bikes too?”

Carter laughs. “Uh, no. He hates anything messy, and anything that makes him appear blue collar. He never once stepped foot inside my grandfather’s garage. That was fine by me.”

“Have you always not gotten along with him?”

“I don’t ever remember a time when I liked him or looked up to him. We’ve always had a strained relationship. I hated the way he treated my mother growing up. I equally hated that she just took it. I was always closer to my grandfather. I frankly think that my father resented my close relationship with my grandfather.”

“Your grandfather died suddenly, right?”
