Dad sits there with his mouth wide open in horror. My sisters and I start laughing again. Aunt Cass is unsuccessfully trying not to laugh. He eventually collects himself. “The man should put on the condom.”

I shake my head. “Mom said to never trust a man to do it properly, and to do it ourselves.”

He turns to Mom and she smiles. “I did say that. It’s for their own protection. This way they know it will be done right.”

Dad sighs. “Our family dinner topics of conversation have really gone downhill the past few years. Let’s move on to something else.”

We all laugh, but we do move on to other topics for the rest of dinner.

A few hours later, I’m in my room on my phone. I start hearing my mom moan and I know what that means. I immediately leave my room to head downstairs. I see that Harley and Skylar are doing the same.

Without any discussion needed, we head outside to our back patio, well out of earshot. Harley grabs us three beers. We sit and open them.

Harley’s been away at college but is home tonight for my birthday. She sighs. “They still go at it every night?”

Skylar and I nod. “Yep. Pretty much without fail.”

She twists her lips. “It’s both commendable and horrific.” We laugh and nod. “How are things at home otherwise?”

Skylar answers, “Pretty good. Dad’s working a lot. More than normal. Mom’s working more too. We miss you, but I know this coming year will be worse for me when you’re both gone. I’m going to have to sit here and drink by myself when they’re going at it.”

I elbow her. “At least you’ll be able to steal my clothes without me knowing and freaking out.”

Skylar smiles. “That’s true. Good point.”

I look back at Harley. “Are you still hooking up with Andrew?”

Harley shakes her head. “No, we broke up. He was kind of a dud. Angelina just broke up with her loser of the month too, so we’re going out a lot. It’s been fun.”

I look at her in shock. “You’re actually going out? Are you now studying only twelve hours a day instead of fourteen?”

She gives me the finger. “I’m trying to get into medical school. Give me a break.”

I laugh. “Harley, you’ve had straight A’s since birth. I don’t think getting into medical school will be a problem.”

She shrugs. “Maybe.”

We sit and talk for another half an hour. When the coast is finally clear, we head inside to our respective rooms.

The next morning, I walk into the kitchen, but hear clanking in the garage. I open the door to see my dad working on his motorcycle. “Is it broken?”

He looks up. “No, I’m just tightening a few things.” He looks past me through the door. “Is your mother up?”

I shake my head. “I haven’t seen her.”

He smiles. “Want to go for a ride?”

My eyes widen and I smile. Mom doesn’t let us on his motorcycle. “Hell, yes I do.”

He points at me. “You can’t tell your mother.”

“Fine by me.”

He hands me a helmet and we head out. We drive all over the city for over an hour. It’s an amazing way to see things. I love the wind in my face and the excitement and thrill of being on a bike.

This is my first time on a motorcycle, and I’m officially addicted. I absolutely love it.

We eventually stop at a park. He buys us two coffees from a food truck, and we sit on a bench.
