CHAPTERNINE

PRESENT

CARTER

Ihad such a nice time with Reagan the other night. She’s incredibly easy to be with. She’s so genuine and funny. It’s refreshing.

Honestly, I want to find a reason to be with her again. Both because we should be seen together and because I want to spend more time with her.

I dial her cell phone. She picks up. “What’s up, Sons of Anarchy?”

I laugh. “I guess that officially makes you myold lady.” I hear her laugh too. “How are you?”

“I’m good. It’s been a really busy day so far. Thank God I’ve brought in more help. I think I’m going to need a few more employees though.”

“That’s great. What you’re building is amazing.”

“Thank you. To what do I owe the pleasure of this call?”

I smile at her bluntness. “I haven’t seen any pictures of us the past few days, have you?”

“I honestly don’t look at that kind of stuff. My friends do, though, so if it was in there, they would have texted me. I guess the two of us having dinner wasn’t front page news. I can’t believe there were more exciting things for them to report on than my getting blackened salmon for dinner the other night.”

I laugh. “Shocking, isn’t it? Well, my friend Collin asked me to come to a club opening. There will definitely be photographers there. We sort of need to be photographed before the engagement. Do you want to go?”

“Sure. When is it?”

“It’s actually tonight. Sorry for the short notice. He just mentioned it to me.”

“My friend Jasmine just broke up with her boyfriend. I told her we would hang tonight.”

“Bring her. I doubt Collin is seeing anyone exclusively. It can be a double date.”

“Is Collin cute? Her standards are high.”

“I don’t know. I guess so. Women seem to like him. Is Jasmine cute?”

“Yes. She’s gorgeous. She’s the one that was standing with me the first time you came into my store.”

“I sort of remember her. I was focused on you though. I can’t picture her.”

“She’s very pretty and has an awesome personality.”

“I won’t tell Collin your line about personality. That usually doesn’t bode well for looks.” She laughs. “What time should I get you?”

“I’m going to have dinner with her beforehand. We’ll meet you there around 9:30?”

“Sounds good. I’ll text you the address. Just shoot me a text when you arrive.”

“Will do.”

* * *

I meetCollin at the club at 9:00. We walk in, and I look at him. “Collin, this club has strippers. What the hell?”

“I said club. I didn’t specify which type of club.”

I roll my eyes. This is so typical of Collin. He’s been pulling stunts like this since we were kids. It’s both endearing and frustrating. “I don’t want to piss Reagan off.”
