“We’ve developed feelings for each other.”

“Did he say that to you?”

I think for a moment. “I guess not in so many words. But Aunt Cass, the sex is out of this world. I’m officially addicted.”

“Just so I’m clear on the events, let’s recap everything. You started a fake relationship. You’ve been lying to your family for months about it. You then faked an engagement. Also lied to your family about that. And now you’re actually fucking him. Are you in a relationship? Are you engaged for real? What’s happening?”

I think for a moment. “I honestly don’t know what we are. We’ve spent the past week consumed by how amazing the sex is. It’s all we’ve done. We’ve barely spoken.” I lower my head in shame. I guess that sounds pretty bad.

“Reagan, I think you’re smart enough to know this situation is headed for disaster.”

“Why? Why can’t I save my business and get the guy?”

“Because it started with lies and you’re still lying about it. Nothing good can come of that.”

“You have a lot of nerve saying that considering you lied to all of us about your relationship with Trevor.” It’s a low blow, but I’m in defensive mode now.

“I didn’t lie. I just didn’t tell anyone about it. That’s different.”

“You’re playing with semantics.”

“Reagan, you know I love you.” I nod. “I’m worried for you. He’s gotten you to lie to your family and friends, something completely out of character for you. It seems to come a lot easier to him than it does to you.”

“That’s unfair. You don’t know him. He’s a good man. He has nothing but good intentions. His father is a dickhead. He’s doing this to stop him.”

“If he wants to stop his father, all he has to do is go public. He’s taking the pussy way out. Don’t pretend you don’t know that.”

I’m silent, processing her words. I’ve thought them before, but I’ve never said them out loud to anyone.

She rubs my back. “I’m worried for your heart. You’re in deep with this guy.”

I blow out a long breath. “I know I am. I honestly agreed to this to save my business and to help him get the company away from his father. Neither of us expected to land here.”

“I know, sweetie, but you need to be careful with a guy like him. Falling for him is dangerous. There’s a lot of pressure on him which causes a lot of poor decision making.”

She’s articulating all my fears from the past few weeks. I rub my temples, eventually looking back up at her. “I can’t begin to describe how explosive it is between us. I’ve never experienced anything like it. My brain has turned to mush from all the orgasms. It’s messing with my head.”

“That’s exactly why it’s dangerous for you.”

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

CARTER

I’m having lunch with LeRond today. He just returned from his vacation last night. Yes, he’s my assistant, but through the years, he’s also become a good, trustworthy friend. That and he’s the only person who knows the true story with Reagan. I need someone to talk to about everything that’s gone on between us.

I’m already sitting as he approaches the table. “Hey, sexy boss man. Did you miss me this week?”

I roll my eyes. “LeRond, behave yourself.”

He salutes me. “Yes, sir.”

“I did miss you. My workload doubled. You’re never allowed to take time off again.”

He laughs.

We order our meals. He tells me about his boyfriend Avery and the cruise they went on last week. They’ve been together for a long time. I’ve gone out with them a few times. They’re a great couple, and I’m happy for him. LeRond is a good guy and has been a loyal employee and friend to me for years.

“Carter, you’re not one for leisurely, gossipy lunches. Tell me why we’re really here. I’m dying to know.”
