“I don’t feel like eating.”

“I’m very paternal these days. I’ll force feed you with a baby plastic spoon and sing you songs if I have to.”

“Ugh. Fine.” I shovel in a few chips. “Happy?”

He shrugs. “Why the tears? Did something new happen?”

“He showed up here and cornered me in the elevator. He was full of excuses.”

“Do you believe him?”

“I don’t know what to believe anymore. My head is a jumbled mess.”

“How did his eye look?”

“Like he was punched in it a week ago.”

Trevor smiles. “My dad is still pissed that I punched him.”

“He had it coming. If you didn’t do it, I would have. Mine would have probably hurt him more though.”

He laughs. “I don’t doubt it.” He’s quiet for a moment. “Your mom and my dad think Carter never set out to hurt you. They think it’s a misunderstanding.”

I lay my head on his chest. “I know.”

“What do you think?”

I shrug. “I don’t know.” I look up at him. “Can I be honest with you?”

“No, lie to me. I prefer that.” He smiles.

“I miss him. I really miss him.”

“Reagan Lawrence, are you dick whipped?”

I laugh through my tears. “Oh god, yes. It’s A LOT to be whipped over. You have no idea.”

“Ugh. I don’t need to hear that shit.”

“Are you joking? I have to suffer through Aunt Cass calling you Secretariat.”

He smiles. “So, what are you going to do?”

“I don’t know. What do you think I should do?”

“It’s up to you, but I think you should hear him out at some point. He’s still fighting for you. I don’t know why he’d still be fighting if he didn’t really care, if it was all an act.” He’s quiet for a moment. Too quiet.

“What?”

He bites his lip. “I heard through the grapevine that he hasn’t been in the office since you broke up with him. That he’s been a complete mess and hasn’t been able to function. He’s going off the rails.”

I sigh. “I know the feeling.”

“I’m the last person to defend the guy, but I’ve been thinking about it, and I feel sorry for him.”

I’m surprised to hear Trevor say that. He’s been the hardest on Carter. I’m pretty sure that’s why I texted him and not my sisters. “What do you mean?”

"How many people did you think about texting before you texted me tonight?”
