He wraps his arms around me and swings me around. “Congratulations. I’m so happy for you.” He places me on the ground.

I smile at him. “Thanks, LeRond. I’m happy too.”

“You hooked yourself a mega-hunk. Lucky girl.”

I laugh as I lean into Carter. He wraps his arm around me. “I guess I did. What are you doing here?”

He hands Carter a set of keys. “I brought Carter one of his motorcycles. He said he needed it.” He hands me a bag. “I also brought you two a little engagement gift.”

I open the bag to find two beautiful leather jackets. One in my size, and one in Carter’s. “Wow, LeRond. Thank you. They’re gorgeous.”

He nods. “I know. I wanted you two to wear them while you ride around town on the bike. It’ll be one hot scene.” Carter and I laugh.

LeRond looks at his phone. “My Uber is here. You two kids have fun.”

LeRond leaves. Mom comes to the door and notices Carter’s motorcycle out front. She shakes her head. “Oh, Christ. I thought you finally found a guy who doesn’t have one of those death traps. You’re truly your father’s child, Reagan.”

I smirk at her. “Proudly.”

I look over at Carter. “We should get going soon. I’m going to head up to change.”

He shakes his head. “You don’t need to change. You can wear jeans. I am.”

“No, I’m changing.” I smile at him. He looks confused.

We headdown to the office. Carter’s nervous. I find it endearing that he’s actually hoping it’s not money, and that it’s something deeply personal from his grandfather. Having received sporadic letters from my father all these years, I know how truly special it is to hear from a loved one who has passed. The feeling of new words and information from them is indescribable.

The attorney is an older woman in her seventies. I sort of love that Carter’s grandfather hired a woman from his generation to handle his estate. I know his father certainly never would.

Carter introduces me as his fiancée. That’s the first time he’s been able to do it for real.

She gives Carter a look. He smiles. “Anything you can say in front of me, you can say in front of her.” The attorney nods.

We sit and she begins. “Carter, your grandfather left something for you for your thirty-fifth birthday.”

I see Carter start to tear. I hold him close.

“There’s no easy way to say this, so I’m going to get right to the point. Your grandfather hoped to be alive for this day but made sure it would happen even if he wasn’t. Carter, your grandfather was very clear that when you turn thirty-five, Daulton Holdings and the family trust were to be turned over to you, no matter the circumstances.”

Carter pinches his eyebrows together. “I resigned yesterday.”

“It doesn’t matter what you did yesterday or any day before that. At thirty-five, the company is yours. He hoped it would go straight from him to you, bypassing your miserable excuse of a human being father but, sadly, that did not happen. He said he’d either teach you the business and turn it straight over to you, or you’d watch your father bastardize it and then bring it back to life. Either way, he knew it would take watching your grandfather or being fueled by your father’s misdeeds to make you into the person you needed to be to run this company.”

Carter is speechless. I ask, “What about Thomas? What happens to him?”

She smiles. “Carter can do whatever he wants with Thomas. He controls his job, and as of right now, he also controls the entire Daulton family trust. It’s all yours Carter. Congratulations.”

Carter opens and closes his mouth a few times before words come out. “Is that all? Anything about the bikes?”

She laughs. “It’s quite a lot Carter. You just became one of the wealthiest men in the world.”

Carter looks at her. “Wealth is measured in happiness.” He then turns to me. “So, yes, I am one of the wealthiest men in the world.”

I softly kiss his lips.

“One more thing, Carter.” She hands him a set of keys and a piece of paper with an address. “The motorcycles are all yours.” She laughs again. “He said you’d ask about those and probably want them more than the company.”
